Search by Input Help

Featured Replies

Hey Guys.  All of a sudden whenever I try to search by input in the control mappings immediately it recognizes a key press.  Namely Joystick Button 197.  I use an xbox controller for views and when I go to the control options menu it appears that 197 is listed as an input for it.  Also my control options menu appears to have 3 different xbox controllers on there.  But when I go to preset manager the delete function is greyed out.  Any ideas how to proceed here?

if it's immediately recognizing a joystick button when you click the search by input box, that means you have something connected with a button being held down. (check things like toggle switches that might be 'continuous')

as for Xbox controller profiles, i've noticed that the sim is *very* buggy with those specifically. for example, if you don't have an Xbox controller plugged in/active when starting the sim, but then turn it on/plug it in after the sim is already running, it'll often show that it's the "default" profile even though it isn't, and the other profile(s) won't even show up. if you make changes at this point and save it as a new profile (as it requires you to do) then that profile will NOT show up as a selectable one if you close and restart the sim WITH the controller plugged in.

in short it's a buggy mess w/ Xbox controllers, unless you have a wired one and you leave it plugged in and active 100% of the time.

i think the sim is also very buggy when it comes to using multiple profiles (multiple devices) at once. for example, if you're holding the right mouse button to move your view around while simultaneously making control inputs (such as rudder/yaw and toe brake inputs while taxiing) it will freeze the joystick inputs while doing so, and then you have to move the joysticks to 'trigger' the sim to look at those profiles again or they'll stay frozen in the same position.

The preset manager can only delete profiles, not entire controllers. It also only deletes the non-default profiles since one must exist for each controller.

If you have multiple Xbox controllers in MSFS its possible you have another device emulating multiple xbox controllers. One of my keyboards had that function in its driver which kind of messed up my controllers in MSFS. I used a program called "USBDeview" to troubleshoot that.

So for xbox the input listed as Controller is correct.  It is connected wirelessly via the xbox dongle.  Then, 2 axis 8 Button Gamepad is listed 3 times and is not correct.  And is also where the errant input is being detected.  Is their a file where I can manually delete the controller if I cannot from the sim menu?

I doubt you can delete the controllers since they are supplied by Windows. You probably have to remove the cause of these inside Windows.
The profiles themselves can be removed manually:

For the Store version, the controller profiles are stored in C:\users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_yyyyyyyyyyyyyyy\SystemAppData\wgs\000yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy\

Replace the xxx for your own username and the y's for whatever it is on your PC. Inside that last folder are several subfolders with long random names (hexadecimal). Each of those is a controller profile unless the folder is empty. They are in fact editable XML files and you can also open them to view the data. The profile name is in there also so that's how you can distinguish which is which.

NOT ALL OF THOSE FOLDERS ARE FOR CONTROLLERS SO DON'T JUST DELETE THEM UNLESS YOU HAVE A BACKUP!
If the files inside those folders contain gibberish instead of readable xml code it might be better to leave them in place since they might also contain your settings. I recommend moving the folders instead of deleting them just in case.

Most likely, you have 3 game controllers detected in Windows. You can go to Control Panel -> Devices and Printers, and check there.  If you have 3 different xbox controllers in "Devices and Printers," MSFS will also detect 3 xbox controllers (MSFS will more or less, detect the controllers that Windows detects).

In "Devices and Printers", I think you can right click on the game controller and then click "Remove device" for the controller you want to remove from Windows.

I find the good xbox controller but not any of the bad generic 2 axis 8 button gamepads.  Other than the scrambled ones.

I also tried your idea @abrams_tank but didn't see anything there other than the main xbox one wireless controller.

I'm not even sure where to go from here.  the only listed device with a "joystick button 197" is the 2 axis 8 button gamepad.  This is driving me nuts though.

Unplug all your controllers and peripherals.  Just use a keyboard and mouse. MSFS shouldn't detect any controllers if you have unplugged all of them.  If MSFS still detects a controller and you have unplugged all of them, then something is not right.

Then you can plug them back in, one by one, and see if the extra controllers come up in MSFS.  If you find the extra controller that comes up in MSFS, then you have found the culprit.

Ok so I ended up figuring it out.  I have a simple foot pedal I've used in the p3d days.  Back then to control the parking brake.  I decided since I can't do a simple one button screen shot in MSFS to reconnect it and assign it to my computer screenshot key combo.  Which it works for.  However when connected it is considered the 2 axis 8 Button joystick and always considered to be pushing button 197.  So I guess I can just disconnect it when I need to search by input.

thanks. all
