Strange autopilot issue, wont follow flight plan or HDG

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I have just done a couple of flights in the Bonanza A36 using the auto pilot and have encountered a strange problem.

I have a simple flight plan loaded and I can see this from the magenta line in the display when engaging the autopilot and selecting GPS mode the plane will not follow the line and seems to fly away from this by about 40 degrees  I have tried engaging heading mode and moving the heading bug towards the direction of the line but the plane flies 55 degrees away from the heading that i set . for example setting the HDG to 230 the plane actually flies at 285 degrees, the only way i can get the aircraft to fly in the heading i was is to deduct 55 degrees.

I cant for the life of me work out what i am doing wrong?

Perhaps gyro drift? Maybe try hitting the "D" key on your keyboard at some point before take off.

Thanks for listening,

Yep that was it, thank you so much for you help. 🙂

I think there’s an option to disable mag drift in Settings. 👍

Lucky for you it was only a simulator. On my first solo cross-country flight, I forgot to reset the compass on the return and ended up flying very,(VERY) near a USAF base in Norfolk. To my shame, I had to request a QDM to get back to Luton.
