July 29, 20223 yr When setting up a vfr/ifr flight plan, do I click on the approach button before I file it? If I do, how do I know what approach to select in regard to the wind direction for the destination runway? Thanks for any help.
July 29, 20223 yr Unless you have the option set to Force Pilot Runway Selection on the Flight Plan tab of the Config screen, the program will select the best runway for you based on winds once you select File. If you have that option set, you override the program's recommendations. Also, you can always ask for a different runway once you're underway and talking to the right controller. I often don't select an approach beforehand, just a runway, and let the program decide if that runway is best and let the program pick an approach for me. If I don't feel like flying that particular approach, I will ask for an alternate approach and it's generally approved. A really helpful feature (especially on vectors) is to press the Appr button on the map window to see the approach that the program is having you fly. Sometimes, if the approach changes for some reason, you need to cycle that button to get it to change, but I find it very helpful.
