October 12, 20223 yr Hi guys, been having a devil of a time (my own fault from tinkering) getting a smooth experience in sim with my G2... Tried settings at default - using open xr toolkit - the not - different scalings etc.... i seem to get the best performance with 50% render scale in the OpenXR Dev Tools and similar in game, but as you can imagine the picture is really bad... i mean, really bad! But smooth as butter! I keep also getting a message like CPU then a time like -0.4 sec or + .6 sec... not really sure what that means but assuming my CPU is not doing the business...even at 4.9Ghz! Im coming to the ominous conclusion that my system (even on mid to low settings) isn't really capable of providing what i need to enjoy VR... maybe i should upgrade top a 3090... do you think that along with a better CPU would do the trick? In the mean time if any have a similar system, i would be grateful if you could share any pointers you may have Cheersy i9 13900KF @ 5.5Ghz | MoBo MSI PRO Z690-A WiFi | Corsair Vengeance Black RGB RS 64gb DDR4 3200MHz | MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Vanguard SOC 32GB | MP33 Pro 1TB M.2-2280 NVME SSD for OS | Samsung 870 QVO 2.5" 4TB SSD SATA2 | Samsung 990 PRO 2TB | Corsair RM1000X 2021 1300W 80 Plus Gold PSU | Antec Dark Fleet DF700 Flux Gaming Case | Win 11 home | Samsung 65" 4K TV | G512 Keyboard | Razer Basilisk V2 Mouse | WinCtrl URSA MINOR 32 Throttle Metal / 32 PAC Metal | WinCtrl Ursa Minor Sidestick |Velocity One Rudder | MiniCockpit FCU and EFIS | WinCtrl MCDU | Stream Deck XL | Tobii Eye Tracker | Pimax Crystal Light | Doug
October 12, 20223 yr I have a nearly identical system - [email protected]/Asus TUF/32GB RAM@3200 - but with an RTX 3080. I can usually run my Quest 2 at 30+ fps with medium/high settings and 100% render scale, except in the largest airports with busy traffic. I used to have a Reverb G2 and had to run it at 70% render scale to get OK fps. So you could probably benefit from a faster GPU. 4 hours ago, vonduck said: i seem to get the best performance with 50% render scale in the OpenXR Dev Tools and similar in game I am not sure if you mean that you have 50% render scale set both in OpenXR and in the MSFS settings. You should never do that. Pick one render scale setting (OpenXR or MSFS) and leave others at 100%. 4 hours ago, vonduck said: I keep also getting a message like CPU then a time like -0.4 sec or + .6 sec Sorry, but I have no idea what kind of CPU message you mean.
October 12, 20223 yr Author Thanks for the reply... the CPU message appears when i have the FPS counter showing in VR...just below the FPS... so im figuring it means my CPU is overloaded.... Ill try the render scale as you suggest at 70%...but looks like an upgrade is in order 😞 Cheers i9 13900KF @ 5.5Ghz | MoBo MSI PRO Z690-A WiFi | Corsair Vengeance Black RGB RS 64gb DDR4 3200MHz | MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Vanguard SOC 32GB | MP33 Pro 1TB M.2-2280 NVME SSD for OS | Samsung 870 QVO 2.5" 4TB SSD SATA2 | Samsung 990 PRO 2TB | Corsair RM1000X 2021 1300W 80 Plus Gold PSU | Antec Dark Fleet DF700 Flux Gaming Case | Win 11 home | Samsung 65" 4K TV | G512 Keyboard | Razer Basilisk V2 Mouse | WinCtrl URSA MINOR 32 Throttle Metal / 32 PAC Metal | WinCtrl Ursa Minor Sidestick |Velocity One Rudder | MiniCockpit FCU and EFIS | WinCtrl MCDU | Stream Deck XL | Tobii Eye Tracker | Pimax Crystal Light | Doug

Before that, my best guess that it is your Graphics Card that is the biggest factor. This sort of tallies with @JacquesBrel 's response too. Theoretically, at 5GHz, your CPU should be plenty to drive the G2 at least decent mid-range settings (clearly, no affordable CPU or GPU combination at the moment is going to drive the G2 resolution at ultra in VR!). But I think the 2080Super will struggle. And when it does, it will put more load on the CPU...which maybe why it's flagging that too. Upgrades tend to be a bit iterative - with each upgrade often only making a relatively small difference. With MSFS, though, I found a GPU upgrade made a massive difference: My start point was: 1st Step AMD3800x CPU overclocked to 4.2GHz; Overclocked RTX2070Super; 32Gb RAM at DDR4 3200 - It would run X-plane11 in VR at medium graphics settings (non-HDR) and High World Objects. MSFS hadn't introduced VR yet 2nd Step Updated my CPU and Cooler to a AMD5800x overclocked to 4.7GHz; other items as above - It would run X-Plane 11 in VR at medium graphics settings (still only non HDR) but now would go to Maximum World Objects. MSFS unusable in VR - major stutters even at minimum settings 3rd Step Updated my RAM to DDR4 3600 - It would now run X-plane11 at high (HDR) graphics setting (just about). MSFS still unusable in VR even at minimum settings 4th Step Updated my GPU to a RTX3080Ti - so present spec is AMD5800x running at 4.7GHz; 32Gb RAM at DDR4 3600; Factory overclocked RTX3080Ti - Modest improvement in Xplane11 in VR; MSFS fully functional in VR at medium to high settings to the point that I haven't used XPlane 11 since. What I don't know is what difference that small change in RAM speed made, but there is no doubt whatsoever that the upgrade in the GPU made the difference between MSFS in G2 VR being not usable versus knock your socks off usable. So if I were you, I wouldn't worry at this stage about the CPU (other than checking that it is actually running at its rated speed) - I would go for a newer GPU...and with the 4000series just out in the market, there are some much more reasonable prices emerging for the 3080/3090 ranges. If you have a choice, though, go for the Ti versions to get the greater VRam (because that might be part of the improvement. That really helps alot in my decision making.... after checking, my CPU is running at 4.9Ghz so looks like the GPU is in need of some attention.... but my MOBO wont fit it so an upgrade there too... the rest i should be able to keep no worries... Thanks again and ill report back when the upgrade is done...
