And even when there are clouds the ceiling is many times wrong. Metar ceilings seem to work more or less of the time on a regional basis. There are places in Europe where they're often not depicted correctly; in the US they're usually reliable, for instance. I believe winds, pressure and temp were extracted from metars at sim launch. The additional metar integration that you often hear whining about from a year or so ago is when metar ceilings and vis were added. I personally was very glad they did this, though of course any further tweaking to make it more accurate would be welcome. But ceilings and vis are usually more accurate now than they were before, when these things were based on no real world observations but simply a model run that was up to 12 hours old. Andrew Crowley
