October 30, 20223 yr Red Sea – Part 4 “Into Remote Places” Part 4 of our Red Sea Tour starts in Ethiopia and finishes in Yeman. Starting in the important railway town of Dire Dawa (HADR) we head north to Djibouti (HDAM). The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway provides landlocked Ethiopia with access to the sea, linking Ethiopia's capital of Addis Ababa with the Djibouti Port of Doraleh. More than 95% of Ethiopia's trade passes through Djibouti, accounting for 70% of the activity at the Port of Djibouti. Djibouti is near some of the world's busiest shipping lanes, controlling access to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. It serves as a key refuelling and transshipment center, and the principal maritime port for imports from and exports to neighboring Ethiopia. A burgeoning commercial hub, the nation is the site of various foreign military bases. From Djibouti we head north 93nm to Assab (HHSB) on the Red Sea coast. Asseb lies at the entrance of Asseb Bay and is Eritrea’s second most important port (after Massawa). Formerly a terminus of caravan routes across the arid Denakil Plain, the Asseb coastal strip was acquired by Italian shipping interests in 1869 and in 1882 became the first Italian colonial possession in Africa Leaving Africa we cross the Red Sea to Al-Hudaydah (OYHD, an important port, exporting coffee, cotton, dates and hides. It was developed as a seaport in the mid-19th century by the Ottoman Turks. In the late 19th-century, Al Hudaydah was a chief exporter of coffee. The coffee produced in Al Hudaydah was considered some of the finest in the region. Sanaa Intl (OYSN) the capital city located in the Sarawat Mountains at 7190 is our next airport. According to popular Abrahamic religions, Sanaa was founded at the base of the mountains of Jabal Nuqum by Shem, the son of Noah, after the latter's death. The Old City of Sanaʽa is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old fortified city has been inhabited for more than 2,500 years and contains many intact architectural gems. Our next stop is Taiz (OYTZ) located in the Yemeni Highlands, near the port city of Mocha at an elevation of about 4,600 ft above sea level. It is the third largest city in Yemen after the capital Sana'a and the southern port city of Aden. Due to the ongoing campaign as part of Yemen's civil war, Taiz is a battleground and a war zone. Once known as the "cultural capital of Yemen", the war has bestowed a new title, "city of snipers". Aden International (OYAA) is our final destination. A local legend in Yemen states that Aden may be as old as human history itself. Some also believe that Cain and Abel are buried somewhere in the city. The port's convenient position on the sea route between India and Europe has made Aden desirable to rulers who sought to possess it at various times throughout history. Known as Eudaemon in the 1st century BC, it was a transshipping point for the Red Sea trade, but fell on hard times when new shipping practices by-passed it. Royal Air Force Khormaksar or more simply RAF Khormaksar was a Royal Air Force (RAF) station in Aden, Yemen. Its motto was "Into the Remote Places". During the 1960s, it was the base for nine squadrons and became the RAF's busiest-ever station as well as the biggest staging post for the RAF between the United Kingdom and Singapore. October 30, 20223 yr Khormaksar is the name of the village/town that the base was built near. In the tradition of the RAF(Royal Air Force) of naming stations after the nearest (usually) village. Hence RAF Duxford, Scampton, Northolt etc. etc. The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA
