5800X3D experiences in P3D?

I’m that user. My post obviously wasn’t super useful, but I just didn’t see the massive gains that I did in MSFS going from a 5600X to the X3D. I run at 1440p and can provide whatever settings are useful. They haven’t really changed since I made that post.

Thanks for chiming in. I hope it was clear I wasn't doubting your findings that in your specific case the upgrade did not bring you any gains. Just for this specific situation, the OP won't know if this applies to him as well, if the parameters are not known. It was only a reply to the comment "No gain in P3D" towards me.

Thank you for giving your resolution setting. I think the easiest way to compare is just taking screenshots from the options, but you don't have to do this now 🙂 It will always be hard to do meaningful comparisons, because there are so many different systems, settings and add-ons people use. I guess the only way to compare performance in P3D in a meaningful way is without using any add-ons, pre-defined settings and easy recreatable benchmark scenario (maybe some kind of replay). If people are interested in this, I can try to create such kind of benchmark and we can discuss about this on a separate topic.

For now (and for everybody who wants to know if an upgrade is worth it or not), I remain recommending going by the way I suggested: Turning down resolution and watch the FPS (of course without frame rate limitation). It will tell you really quick if the CPU is the bottleneck currently or not. If FPS rise on a lower resolution, the CPU is still fine.

The reason you do not see P3D in benchmarks are the same as FSX, they tried it once with FSX sometime after release, but it was found there are too many variables. which version any addons res used so it was dropped,

But unfortunately not the 5800X3D, which outperforms all CPUs (even the newer 7000 series) across all simulators

Yes, exactly; focusing on the 5800X3D for the purpose of my question, not the 7950X.  Rather than new DDR5 RAM, 7000 CPU, and motherboard; perhaps just a drop-in replacement one last time on AM4.  Despite no overclocking ability, and not being able to take advantage of dynamic overclock switching with my Dark Hero motherboard, curious if it would be any kind of uplift for the Christmas holiday before having to jump platforms in my next upgrade in a year or two.

One thing you should check is if you are currently GPU limited with your graphics settings (which can be easily achieved using high SSAA settings in P3D), then a CPU upgrade will not really help. Personally with my 3090 and not using 4K resolution, I'm not. But you have to check your GPU usage to be sure 🙂

I'm running in windowed mode and can NEVER get AA to look right in 5.3.  If I use MSAA, the ground shimmers less but the aircraft doesn't look as good/smooth.  If I use SSAA, the aircraft looks better but the ground shimmers like no other.  I can run up to 8x MSAA and 2x SSAA smoothly.  4x SSAA is where I run into performance drops, particularly at night when volumetric lighting is present.  (Again, running with a 3080 10 GB.)

No gain in P3D5 with 5800X3D, but what was you coming from ?

Yes, I saw that too and wasn't fully clear.

Appreciate the feedback thus far.  Thank you.

I just upgraded from an Intel 8086k on an AORUS motherboard to a 5800x3D on a b550 AORUS and the results were nothing short of spectacular.

I was able to reuse the PSU, RAM (3200 MHz DDR4), graphics card (GTX 1080 stock), case & storage drives so, ultimately it was just a MB/CPU change. Reinstalled all the same software - no tweaks - immediately had 60 FPS (monitor refresh rate) and was buttery smooth in PMDG's 747-400 at payware airports including Aerosoft's Heathrow with heavy clouds (using the same mid to high settings as before). As close as I can get to an apples to apples comparison. Similar result with MSFS.

Best simple upgrade I've ever done.

@Steve_mac, with a change of MB and CPU how did the OS handle things? Did you have to contact Microsoft?

Didn't need to contact Microsoft at all. I have a physical Windows USB Windows 10) with the activation key. Uninstalled all programs (not Windows, of course), added a new m2 storage which became the main drive with the OS and MSFS installed. Just activated as part of the windows install, simple. Once the OS was fully installed I updated to Windows 11 immediately - no issues there either.

I see you have the 8086k as well. Bought it in 2018 for P3D owing to its single-core performance.
