European Space Agency taking space based solar seriously

Featured Replies

Looks like ESA is serious about the idea. Considering funding a study to see if its feasible.

It's reusable rocket technology that's making it potentially feasible.

It looks promising Martin.  I'll never see it but perhaps my great grandkids will.  It's an enormous undertaking and I don't think it could be done by one nation alone.  But a multinational effort could make it happen.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

Well the first attempts won't be mega sized projects Noel, they will be relatively small affairs. They have already tested the feasibility of conversion to microwaves and beaming to a receiver, in the lab.

And of course it doesn't have to be one mega sized system, a number of smaller arrays fit the bill.

It wasn't really a practical idea of course but now we have much cheaper launches thanks to the private sector and reusability, its definately on the cards.

China have already constructed the first collection tower and experiments by Airbus look promising.

The focus at the moment is in terms of improving efficiency regarding transmission.

I'm about 30 years younger than you and I'll never see it either.

From the BBC article.

"Separately from the ESA proposal, in the UK, a company, Space Solar, has been formed. It aims to demonstrate beaming power from space within six years, and doing so commercially within nine years."

Not sure how they will go from a demonstration to commercially in only 3 years after the demo, but of course it doesn't have to be a large array. And by then, hopefully, Starship will be functional with its 100 ton payload.

China, USA, Japan... all taking this seriously.

Guess who will get there first... likely to be China of course. 🙄
