Map Enhancement Tool -- LOD and Map Questions

Featured Replies

I'm absolutely new to this tool, which leads me to two questions?  Both relate to my flying GA aircraft, so low and slow.

(1). LOD Setting:  Using Bing (Latest), "Map options" provides two LOD alternatives, 200 and 400.  Do these override the MSFS LOD settings (ie., 0 to 200) or, assuming you want to realize the tool's outcome, should I set the MSFS option at 200 (or ???).  And;

(2) Google Maps Server (Pro):  Recognizing much of the descriptions are gibberish to me, is there a graphic quality benefit in using the (purchasable) Google Maps Server (Pro) option?

Thank you,

Brian

The Enhancer LOD setting isn't related to the MSFS setting in any way. It simply doubles up the size/quality of the tiles. Worth a try to compare the two settings, but be aware that the higher LOD setting will impact your frame rate.

IMHO, there's no real desperate need for the "Pro" features. Not that I'd wish to deny any income for the developer of this [excellent] mod, but because many of us can get by with the Bing servers (or any of the other free server choices).

Thank you for your thoughts on this.  I have started tinkering with the tool versus msfs old settings, but nothing scientific.  Any advice/experience that shortens my learning curve is very appreciated.

As for the google pro alternative, I am wondering if it provides a net improvement (say versus Bing Updated) re; image quality, and if so, what the relative impact on system performance is?

Open to any experience and practicable advice,

Brian

A lot depends on where in the world you're doing your flying. Sometimes Bing is better, sometimes the other servers. Best to test - and make notes.

Also - when you're switching map providers in the mod, be sure to clear both the Enhancer cache and the MSFS data cache (if you're using one).

As a rough rule of thumb - and totally my opinion only - flying in North America and Japan = Google.
Flying in Western Europe = latest Bing maps.

Thanks for the advice.  ...including your reminder to clear the caches -- something I hadn't thought to do,

I am assuming it makes sense to set the cache in both the enhancement tool and msfs to 10g -- yes?  Or another setting?

Again, thank you for your response,

Brian

I have my MSFS data cache set to 32Gb. 10Gb should be fine. The down-side of having a larger data cache is that it takes longer to rebuild if you suffer a disconnection when in mid-flight. I used to get these a lot (very irritiating!) but they seem to have gone away ... touch wood!

As for the Enhancer cache - I have mine set to infinite and just keep an eye on it. I clear it once in a while - more out of habit than need.
