Weather you don't see every day

Recommended Posts

The current forecast for Guam Intl (PGUM):

PGUM 231740Z 2318/2424 02020G30KT 5SM -SHRA BKN015 OVC020
TEMPO 2318/2320 08035G45KT 2SM +SHRA BKN012
FM232300 03040G60KT 3SM SHRA BKN015 OVC020
FM240300 VRB125G150KT 2SM SHRA BKN015 OVC040
FM240900 16075G125KT 3SM SHRA BKN015 OVC040

Winds variable at 125 gusting to 150...yikes!!  That's 150 knots, or 172 MPH.  And 6 hours later still 75 gusting to 125 knots.

That would be Cat 5 Super Typhoon Mawar bearing down on the island, expected to pass near overhead at ~03Z on 24 May 2023.

The air force base housing units at Andersen AFB on Guam are steel-reinforced concrete pillbox-like buildings with steel shutters and each with its own generator.  They pin the shutters closed and ride the storms out.  The big hangars don't fare so well in 150 knots winds, though.  Super Typhoon Paka went through there in late 1997 with 140 MPH winds and did half a $billion in damage, destroyed 1500 buildings, and knocked power out to the entire island.

Hope everyone in the area will be safe. This could be a typhoon chaser sim opportunity. I wonder if FSX (or P3D) with Active Sky , or MSFS with default weather is better.

You can get a good view of this type of weather on WindyT,  I think it's the best weather program available.  You can even get local doppler radar anywhere in the world.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.
