Airport “radio” vs Unicom

Featured Replies

CYZT Port Hardy shows a “Hardy Radio” and a “Pacific Radio”

I try to use them like a Unicom, but just “…please repeat your request “

I perused the manual… should I skip that part and just let it go?

thanks

The "Radio" frequencies are FSS rather than Unicom or Multicom.

About all you can do with them is open or close a VFR Flight Plan, give VFR postion reports and get information like for frequencies or weather.

If trying to get clearance or IFR Release, you would use the Center Frequency, assuming you're at a remote airport with none of the normal options.

At YZT, the FSS would give you airport information, preferred runway, wind, altimeter and any traffic in the zone etc. You would then make position reports like you would in any non towered airport. The YZT FSS would also get your IFR clearance from center for you. Pacific Radio in that area would be for outside of the YZT CZ.
