Flight simulation at Oshkosh EAA

Recommended Posts

Russ makes some good points about the intersection of real world aviation and home simulators. Also, he would have real world aviation events be more welcoming to flight sim hobbyists.

He says the FAA will not approve MSFS 2020 for flight training like it has X-plane 11. And probably will not approve MSFS 2024 "because it looks to be even more game like".

XP has been approved for flight training with the addition of certified hardware for many years...

In addition to this (no huge surprise), Russ makes the point that home simulators like MSFS can be used very effectively for pilots wishing to keep their procedural skills while away from actual flying. A concept that has been empirically shown. Most turnkey desktop simpits are owned by current real-world pilots. This is also why the US military has whole heartedly embraced the PC simulator based on off-the-shelf components. Not a replacement for full cockpit sim, more as a supplement for specific skills training.
