Anyone go from 5800x3D to 7800x3D?

I’ve seen the benchmarks running MSFS and it would seem there are significant gains to be had with a 4090 at 4K.

It’s a complete system upgrade, so not cheap, but this is flight simming so nothing is cheap 🙂

Has anyone done this upgrade?

Anyone considered it?

I have just gone from 5800x3d to a 7900x3d, mainly because I got the chip at a very good price on Prime Day.

I’m quite happy with the results and would estimate a 15 to 20% increase in frame rate and improvement in overall smoothness.

Most importantly (and the main reason I did this) performance in the Fenix A320 has significantly improved, as I am using the integrated the AMD graphics chip render the Fenix displays. I’m running the Fenix at high quality and am getting the same performance as the PMDG 737. 
 

Note though that I am using PBO for the 7900x3d (which the 5800x3d is not capable of) and I’m at 1440p, not 4K. I also invested in fast RAM (6000Mhz). Graphics card is a 4070 Ti.

Thanks for sharing your situation. I gather you are GPU limited most of the time now (although running at 1440p might be shifting the bottleneck back to your CPU? - not sure)?

I didn’t realize that these new AMD CPUs include graphics 😳. That’s very interesting.

So are you popping panels out to a second screen connected to the integrated GPU? I guess that alone is a big help… did it eliminate the hit from popping out panels? Right now I pop out panels on a 2nd display connected to my 4090 and it creates a hit on FPS. 
 

Edit… One other question… do you think the added clock frequency and boost of the 7900x3D is worth the extra $100 over the 7800x3D?

The iGPU is actually only used to render the Fenix gauges (ND, PFD, MCDU). I have a single monitor connected. In essence, the iGPU frees up some resources on the dedicated graphics card, but this is a unique feature that is (afaik) only available on the Fenix A320. 
 

Regarding the 7800x3d vs 7900x3d: the former has two more CPU cores available for use by MSFS (as the 7900x3d parks half the cores during gaming) but as you pointed out, the frequency is higher. I haven’t compared the two, but I saw some benchmarks that showed a modest speed advantage for the 7900x3d, while others showed the opposite. Hard to say, and might depend on the specific situation and used apps. I chose the 7900x3d purely because I got it for a good price (probably because most reviewers hated it 🙂 ). 
 

I’m not quite sure where my bottleneck is now, but I think I’m mainly main-thread limited.

Good choice. I don’t think you can go wrong with the 7800x3d. I’d recommend to pair it with 6000Mhz  RAM. Seems to be the sweet spot got this platform.

Indeed... that is certainly the consensus.  I've got my eye on some Corsair 6000 CL30 with tight secondary timings that should do nicely.  My parts should arrive before the weekend if all goes well... I'll report back on my findings. I'm not expecting huge gains but something that helps with busy airports will be welcome.

I'm really hoping that the integrated GPU might help with pop-out panel performance. That will be one thing I will be testing.

Ryzen 7800X3D works nice with MSFS, I got 20+fps compared to my old I9 10900k

Ryzen 7800X3D is a very nice cpu much more parameters to optimize, you canOC it the old way with Bclk or the new name ECLK

i get some new G-Skill 2x16 and 2x24gb ES sets from Computec the 48gb set is tricky 

MoBo Asus Crosshair 670E Hero run at bus speed 105mhz ( boost 5300mhz) mem 6200mhz cl30 FCLK 2100

100% stable in MSFS 2020 paired with a Galax 4090 at 3100mhz 

Custom wather cooling on CPU GPU

my old system with 5800x3d was nice but not close to the 7800X3D system

Sounds like a great setup and you’re clearly an experienced overclocker. One thing I dont like about the 5800x3D is there is zero overclocking.

It seems the most popular way to overclock the new 7800x3D is to use PBO and a negative curve to undervolt it to get more power envelope to achieve higher boost clocks. Is that what you’re talking about? Not sure what Bclk vs Eclk is referring to. 

Are you running your infinity fabric at 2100? I think I saw in some video that the best results were with it at 2033.

not really, i play with temp and good cooling it works like the nvidia boost for the gpu 

as you know the max boost for 7800x3d is 5050mhz  7900 5150mhz 7950 5250 a good 7950 can do 5500mhz as max , if you find a good 7800x3d the max is less then 100mhz to 7950x3d that on the CCD0

V-cache CCD (CCD0) that used for MSFS in my case i dont use a positive or negative curve i use std voltage in my case it can boost to 5350mhz 106 x 50,5 = 5350mhz a 300mhz higher clock the hole boost register.  It can do 107 ECLK with positive 10 curve 5400mhz but iam not comfortable with that 24/7, to clerafy negitive 30 curve the max boost is 5050

example : you set negative 20curve and rise the bus speed to 105 it be unstable and crash to little voltage to the cpu it can do 5050mhz but not 5300mhz

Thanks. You probably created more questions for me than you answered 😝 I need to do more homework. 

EDIT: A bit of homework revealed Eclk overclocking is raising the CPU core clock and only high-end boards support that. I went with an ASUS TUF board and I don't think it supports Eclk. I'm going to do what I can with PBO and curves.

No pop-out fps loss any longer...

I previously used a 10700K on Asus 490e with Gigabyte 3070 and lost 15fps to pop-outs and air manager. Replaced with 7800x3d on Gigabyte B650 Elite AX. No fps loss now using  the 3070 or my current 4080 Master. I now understand the trouble that Asobo must be having regarding this problem since it can go away after a hardware change. Also, it does not matter if I use the discrete GPU or the B650 IGPU.

Set 70 degree at -20 offset in UEFI. To run substantially cooler and quieter with almost no performance hit you can disable the overclock.

Cinebench score from Guru3d 18193 multi-core, 1785 single. My system at 70deg/-20 17926 multi-core 1690 single.

Set:

Tweaker / (PBO) Enhancement / 70 / Level 2  Save and Reboot. Return to UEFI.

Set:

Settings / AMD Overclocking / PBO Limits --- Disable

Verify:

Settings / AMD Overclocking / Curve Optimizer --- All cores --- Negative --- 20

(More can be achieved on a per core basis if you want to put the time into verifying the stability of each core/thread.)

I got my new 7800x3D system running… on an Asus TUF B650M board with 32 GB EXPO ram (CL30). It’s way faster than my 5800x3D. It’s amazing. Without PBO, the clocks would boost to 4600-4800 but now they consistently boost to 5000. I have a weak core (core 3) so I had to do an individual curve optimization… core 3 can only run at -10, while the rest can do -35. I also splurged on a Gen 5 M2 SSD and it’s now shocking how fast my system loads MSFS now. I’m actually GPU limited in simple aircraft, but still main thread limited in most sophisticated birds. If I never added any scenery or traffic, I’d never need frame generation now, as I’m consistently over 60FPS… usually 70-80FPS at TLOD 300 and other settings on Ultra. Previously, I would be around 45-60FPS so this update gave me around 20FPS… or about an 40% uplift! Overall, I think this system is a much closer balanced match for the 4090. I’m super pleased with this setup.

Nice system and that you use PBO and curve optimation , free performance 

I have done some optimations on my system , fine tune the cores have a weak core nr7 that a run +5 the rest -5

I use ECLK not evry MoBo have it ASUS have it on the 670E not on the B650 line up

My Bios settings on ASUS Crosshair 670E Hero,

Infinity 2100mhz, mems 6200mhz cl30

PBO enabled , Curve -5 and +5 on core7

Asynchronous mode

bclk1 100mhz , blck2 106mhz

on this settings it boost 5300mhz (max 5350mhz) most of the time , my max temp when run Cinebench R23 multi test is 75c and at MSFS 62-65c

CB23 score multi 18831 single 1937

Is the extra performance worth it +6-7fps in MSFS ? , for me yes
