FANTASTIC shader enhancement for water

Recommended Posts

A very talented guy named Ingvarr has released a new file to improve the shader effects for water. The result is absolutely stunning and shows all FSX potential with DirectX9.A warm thanks to you Ingvarr :-beerchugInstallation is very easy:1) Download "Water20.fxh" from http://depositfiles.com/files/2111633 or http://rapidshare.com/files/63610098/Water20.fxh.html(free download)2) Back up your original Microsoft Games/Microsoft Flight Simulator X/ShadersHLSL/TerrainWater20.fxh and replace it with the new one.3) Delete the whole TERRAIN folder's content you'll find here:FOR XP users,Go to C:/Documents and Settings/YOUR NAME/Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/FSX/Shaders/TerrainFOR VISTA users,Go to C:/Users/YOUR NAME/AppData/Local/Microsoft/FSX/Shaders/TerrainAll Shaders files (Terrain and Water) will be recompiled on next run so don't worry :--)Here are some screens with the new effects (Bloom effect ON + FEX):Enjoy!20071022194812309lm1.jpg2007102220228274yr4.jpg2007102220237185si5.jpg2007102220525643uf2.jpg2007102220534372wo2.jpg

Looks nice! What level of water detail is FSX on to get the effect?Frame rate impact?

Hi Geofa,The screens are made with UT Canada together with Vancouver+.No problem here.I will check with UT USA and report.

Jack, I didn't notice any frame rate impact so far.I use High 2.x but you can also try the file with lower 2.x settings.

Geofa,Here are some pics with UT USA and FEX.I didn't notice any issue.Maybe can you create a new "Terrain" folder and see if it helps.Regards,David20071022231844403di1.jpg2007102223232073hz6.jpg20071022232724529fo5.jpg20071022232937778ut9.jpg20071022233113198bo5.jpg

No thats not realistic water. There is very little difference between this and FS9.Crysis has rolling 3D waves with froth. It actually looks a lot better than the "magic screenies".http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/179259.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/179260.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/179261.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/179262.jpgVideos here:www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/73018.html

How long will we compare oranges and apples?????:-hmmm Crysis is Crysis and FSX is FSX.When I'll be able to fly a 767-300 in Crysis I will probably switch :--))

They are both directx games with graphic engines that render the world! So the graphics quality can be compared.

The graphics quality is an important part of a game but it's not all.Well, I am not a Crysis expert but I don't believe it renders the whole world. And with something like 50Gb and today's hardware and technology, FSX provides navigation database, weather parameters, avionics systems, AI for both planes and boats etc..., with a very honnest graphics quality.Maybe this interview with Phil Taylor can explain this much better then I do:http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=5wKe3V1l6Dk

Hi David,I don't want to be a kill-joy here but I'm trying to see the difference between the default FSX stuff (see shot below) without FEX and the shots you have posted. Is it something to do with the slightly higher frequency swells perhaps.?Re WOZhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/179265.jpg

That water is just a different color. Its debatable which one is even "better".

OK I see its all to do with Fresnel reflection not wavelets or swells. When you look at an angle at the water surface there's a change in the surface appearance because of both refection and refraction. It gives the surface a more silvery appearance than what appears in FSX. Phil has acknowledged it as being a good tweak. So I guess it is. Must go down to lake next time and take a look-see.However, I wonder what the problem is that Geofa is having with this tweak ? before I try it.Re WOZ

>Well, I am not a Crysis expert but I don't believe it renders>the whole world.>And with something like 50Gb and today's hardware and>technology, FSX provides navigation database, weather>parameters, avionics systems, AI for both planes and boatsI'm tired of this argument getting used to justify bad performance, as if any flight simulator by definition must run at 20FPS and have 3 years ago's graphics technology. FS does not render the whole world at the same time - it streams data in dynamically, which is also what Crysis does with "maps" that are many miles in size at an amazing level of detail.I will bet you anything Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3 and the other new DX10 games coming out actually have higher polygon/triangle counts per scene than FSX does. That's all that matters to a video card as long as its actually getting fed the right information in the right way at the right time.I could easily sit here and say by this type of argument that Crysis should run poorly because it's rendering all that dense foliage and calculating the actions and reactions of all the AI enemies that are coming after you, the trajectories and associated physics effects on the environment of all the bullets, rockets etc that you fire, a real day and night cycle with the sun as the actual lighting source for the world and so on...

Ahh yes, its not all just about graphics! I almost forgot that flight simulator has the "flight modelling" not found in games like Crysis. Just a minute, Crysis does have: a real world physics system, human models, a breakable environment, crash/damage modelling, realistic AI, earthquakes, breaking ice, landslides, and tornados!!

Correct. You only need to watch the trailers for the "Ace Combat 6" simulator to realize this argument is no longer valid.www.acecombatsix.com

I think it looks pretty good. I just have two questions, what is the purpose of deleting the contents of the terrain folder?what will that do?

Fantastic videos with Crysis. Can't wait for the release. The environments created are beautiful and complex.

Here are my comparisons:1. FSX (High 2.x FSX water effects setting)2. FSX with new water20.fxh (High 2.x FSX water effects setting)3. FSX with new water20.fxh and FEX
