Huge FPS drop after engine start

Featured Replies

Hello, I made a topic about the same issue for quite some time ago, suggested fixes didn't solve the problem. Haven't been using the sim since then, since it's practicly unusable with the low FPS. Trying again in case someone has been experiencing this lately, or in case there are any new ideas.

My FPS during cold and dark, in any study-level aircraft, such as the NGXu, at a performance-demanding airport is averaging 40FPS. The scenario is as follows: Im in cold and dark. I start up the plane according to company SOP, as soon as the engine becomes "Avail" the FPS drops immediatly from 40 to 14-16FPS. Didn't ahve this problem before, it just appeared. By engine becoming available, i mean when the AVAIL light illuminates on the upper ECAM display in all A3XX, and in the boeings, such as the NGXu, when the start switches jump back from GND to OFF. I use the FSL a320, PMDG NGXu, PMDG 747 400-8. QW787. MJC q400. The problem exists in all aircrafts.

Im using P3d V5.1

My specs are low/mid tier, I've a;

I5-8400, not overclocked or anything

8GB RAM

GTX 1070 8GB,

sim installed on HDD, doesn't make any difference for me, have tried both SSD and HDD, didnt solve it.

I've quite low settings;

FXAA: oFf

AA: 2x MSAA

TF: Ani 4X

TR: medium

Vsync: Off

T FPS : unlimited

Motion blur : on

Variable refresh rate, Wide view Aspect ratio, Mipmap VC:; Off

Scenery&terrain sliders etc set to low/med end.

No reflections

EA on.

Thanks for any replies, suggestions and fixes.

Even in the Q400? This is the most FPS-friendly plane I know of, other than the default FSX Cessna 172.

Anyway, how does it behave if you update the client (just that) to v5.4?

Other than that, I'd try increasing RAM. 8 GB is too little, specially for the FSL birds.

Main rig: self built, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (with SMT off and CO -50 mV), 2x16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, Nvidia RTX 5060Ti 16GB, 256 GB M.2 SSD (OS+apps) + 2x1 TB SATA III SSD (sims) + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (storage), ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS air cooler, Viewsonic VX2458-MHD 1920x1080@120-144 Hz (G-sync compatible), Windows 11. Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020, MSFS2024 and even FS9! Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .

VKB Gladiator NXT Premium Left + GNX THQ as primary controllers. Xbox Series X|S wireless controller as standby/mobile.

My guess is that once you get an engine started, the plane creeps ever so slightly, and even that tiny amount of movement spikes your memory usage up enough to trigger RAM paging.

Trying to get P3Dv5 to run reliably on such a low-spec machine is going to be like sleeping on a bed of nails, but less comfortable...

Yes, it's true that my specs are a bit low. But it did run fine before, so there must be something else.

Will check with new client!
