Stanford study finds seniors favor virtual reality

Featured Replies

This feels almost counterintuitive to me...

The demographically "trending older" audience of Avsim for instance, has, from my perspective over the years, often seemed to land somewhere between either neutral or even outright hostile to VR (bias on my part?) while seeming much more comfortable with older tech like trackIR.

Anecdotally, my interactions with peer seniors show aversion to even trying something so new, though there are always exceptions. (like me!)

So..... studies showing older folk enthusiastically accepting VR often strikes me as being a bit..... against my own personal experiences, and that tends to make me look for or suspect flaws/bias/sensationalism in the data....... 🤔

Not sure what to think

I am 76 and I love VR. Not just for flight simming. I watch movies on it. It is to me like being at an IMAX. I have tried Skyrim, but I don't see a lot of positives over the standard game.

And even I'm not so far in that I will watch more than the occasional (Mostly 3D) movie!

As for Skyrim, the difference between the flat and Vr versions are pretty much nonexistent, so there's really no true upside to putting up with the sometimes uncomfortable headset, possibly for hours, just for pretty much the exact same experience as on a monitor.

This changes dramatically with a sufficiently upgraded/modded Skyrim, on a computer that can handle the added visual complexity.

Suddenly, you may feel you're actually inside a lush fantasy universe, and you might spend all your time thereafter gawping in astonishment at all of the details that draw you deeper than you've ever been into that universe.....
