Wrong location on Windows 11 PCs

On two desktop PCs running 11 Pro the Home Screen (prior to logging in) shows weather and traffic information. But it’s for Birmingham. I live 60 miles north in Cheshire with my nearest towns Stockport and Wilmslow. Manchester is 10 miles further north.

I’ve followed instructions on how to change my default location but it’s not working. Is this feature broken?

@christb, thanks. I just followed the instructions from a Google search. W11 does seem to have some odd quirks.

I’ve allowed the weather app access to my selected location so I’m not sure what else I can do. I guess my ISP has me in Birmingham. Strange.

do you use bing maps?

I think I had to change my default location there to get it back to normal.

I haven't installed it. Maybe it's part of the OS.

Here are my settings in Location. This is so annoying. Despite the map showing my location to within 1 mile of my home on a restart the home window still shows info for Birmingham. What is the matter with this flawed software!!! 😏

I think that in many cases the “location” used by external apps is based on the geographic location of your ISP’s gateway to the internet, which may not be in the same place as your physical connection to the ISP network.

I work for a large corporation, and our corporate headquarters is in central/western New York State. But, the corporate data center where our computer systems actually connect to the Internet is in the state of New Jersey, 130 miles southeast of here.  If I use a computer at work to browse for products at Best Buy, the website shows my “local store” as being located in Newark, New Jersey, not the (correct) Best Buy store in Big Flats, New York. I always have to manually change my “local store” setting to the correct location.

It’s different when using a mobile phone, which will use its built-in GPS to determine your precise location. Not many PCs have a GPS interface.

I searched for “what’s my isp address” and it came back as Stockport - a few miles away. I still can’t figure out why it’s choosing Birmingham. I think I’m just going to turn off those features.

I fail to understand why I should need to. I haven’t installed Bing maps. Is it part of the OS? How do I access it?

I believe it is part of the OS, it should be in the apps section under settings, then installed apps, if not then you must not have it installed.

Sorry for the goose chase.

Another thing you might want to check is your default location in the weather app if you have that installed.

Other than those apps and the default OS location settings I cant think of anything else to offer off hand.

Default location settings/ Bing Maps/ and the Weather app were the ones i had to go through and setting my Oakla Speed Test app to default location.

I do notice that you are showing the bing maps icon turned on in your above screenshot,

I would check that, its the fourth app down from the top in the screenshot.

Identified as maps.

@chrisb, I'm grateful for your help. It's a warm day here so the desktop PCs aren't on. But I have 11 Pro on my Dell laptop. Running same version as the two upstairs.

When the Dell boots up there are no desktop notifications of roads and weather. It's blank with just the Windows theme background picture showing. I have the same Location settings as shown earlier so why don't I see the same info?

Perhaps because I have Maps set permanently off in the settings. I've changed it to power dependent. Let's see what happens when I reboot....

Okay, I've rebooted and nothing shows on the Home Screen like I get on the two desktops. But going into Privacy & Security and selecting Location I have Weather & Maps enabled.

Clicking Set Default for "Default Location" and it is very close to my actual location. So that bit works but not the display on the Home Screen after a restart.

Puzzling.

A bit later and it's called the Lock Screen. Further info here.

Still can't get it working despite all settings correct. I'll compare to my desktops in a day or two.

I tried sorting this out yesterday but still no joy. When I open Maps the centre of the map is within 1 mile of my home. But still Birmingham remains in the weather and travel apps on the opening screen.

I’m leaving this for now before I go mad.

This is utterly bizarre. I've turned off Location Services and restarted my computer.

On the lock screen it now shows Cheadle for both weather and traffic services!

So turning OFF the Location Service has fixed the problem. Anyone care to guess how that has solved the problem?

Having managed to get weather and traffic info displayed on both my W11Pro computers Lock Screen it’s now disappeared without any settings having been changed.

I really despair at how Windows 11 now seems to have a mind of its own. It’s not really important but when you tell the OS to display something you expect it to work. 🤨
