If I enable copilot options for Responds to radio and also changes frequencies, all works great. 

If I just enable copilot changes frequencies only and I handle the comms, the copilot will change the frequency maybe twice during the whole flight. 

I looked at the log and it seems my readbacks of the frequencies are seldom correct. 

Does the program need my frequency readback to be correct or is it supposed to change the frequency regardless of my readback?

Yes.  The program uses the readback as the trigger to change frequencies and the readback must be correct for it to do it properly.
