Safely delete one install of MSFS when dual installed?

Featured Replies

This strikes me as potentially troublesome to disastrous, but I don't know.  What's happening is I have two intact installs of MSFS:  one on my former PC w/ Win 10, and the other on my more recent build in Win 11.  I wish to completely remove the old install and looking for guidance from someone who did this w/o untoward consequences.  Hopefully it's just a case of running the uninstall on the old box with the new box turned off, or something along those lines.

What a pickle. If we're talking about two diffent PC's, I would make a backup of the officials folder on the current PC (in case of an impending reinstall), then delete the obsolete installation. Or even better: wait until someone who has been in the same situation chimes in.

If the other MSFS installation is on a different computer, uninstalling it should not affect the other installation.

Thanks that is a simple and great idea I will do that save the Official folder--OMG it's 411Gb!  I think it's possible to save controller settings too, yes?  I will wait a bit no hurry and see if anyone else has gone thru this.

The controller setting are stored in the cloud so they are automatically copied to new installations.

Thanks, that I aware of having done a 3 total new installs now.  How long does MS retain those once an install is deleted?

Your controller settings should remain after the new install. If you have them named, all you need to do is choose the profile name. What will not remain is your aircraft views. If I were you, I would back those up to save some time. I went through this a couple of months ago and I had to re-do all my views.

After my last installation (when I upgraded my PC), I zipped the official folder. It does take some time, but can save many hours of downloading content in case of a reinstall.

Now if I have new PC off, and connect old PC to the internet, and do a normal uninstall of MSFS, how could that possibly affect the Official or Community folders on new PC?  If I then turn new PC on after completing the uninstall on old PC and turn it off, then start MSFS, if anything then gets removed out of new PC's Official and Community folders this would imply MS actual goes in to those local storage locations and deletes them w/o user permission?  That seems unlikely...and I think this is what maybe @orchestra_nl is surmising.

I agree - deleting the old MSFS should not affect the new one. It seems highly unlikely.

Okay well all seemed to go well I was able to delete the old install and no untoward effects post.

Cheers and thanks!
