Need help upgrading my PC

Featured Replies

Hi,

I want to upgrade my PC for MSFS2024 and looking for some recommandations since I am not really up to date regarding pc hardware. What I have so far:

I9-10850k
MSI Z490 Gaming Plus

G.Skill RipJaws V 32 GB DDR4-4000 DIMM CL18
Noctua D15
RTX 3090
be quiet! Straight Power 11 850 Watt ATX
Fractal Design Define 7
1x 2TB SSD m2
1x 1TB SSD m2
1x 500 GB SSD

That what I have crossed needs to change, I guess. I am not sure if my power supply will be sufficient and my cpu cooler.

Do you have any recommentations what I could upgrade and with what I could replace?

I recommend an AMD-5 motherboard and AMD-X3D CPU + 64GM 6000mhz+ Ram. I have a Noctua D15 as well and I use Kingston Fury (non RGB) memory sticks, they are a little lower in height so I don't have to raise the front fan on the cooler as much to accommodate.

System: I ASRock X670E | AMD 7800X3D | 64Gb DDR5 6000 | RTX 4090 | 2TB NVMe | Seasonic Vertex 1000W I LG Ultra Gear 34 UW I

Do you plan on keeping the case? I have the Define 7 XL and while it is roomy and easy to built into, I think it is not as good for airflow.
On the other hand, the AMD CPU's do not require as much cooling as the Intel CPU's so it should be fine keeping it.

Your PSU is good for a new AMD built. If you plan on upgrading that GPU to a RTX50xx next year that might be different, but hopefully they are more efficient than the 3090 so that PSU might last you a few years yet.

I am planning to do a completely new built early 2025 but your question made me think about whether to upgrade or built an entirely new system.

Yes, I plan to keep the case for the moment. I had issues with my i5-10850k in the beginning. Overclocking was not even close to possible because of the temps. So if AMD tend to be a little more merciful on temperatures, I think the case should work out (I removed the door of the case and added more fans) - to be honest, I don't check the temperatures anymore, but my system is stable, I think it's fine.

Would I see a benet from the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D compared to the 7800x3d ? I had to buy like 62 bucks more, would it be worth? Especially because I use the rig also for photo and video editing. I also thought of going with the Corsair 48gb 6000 cl30 and just upgrade to another 48GB if it's not enough, just to profit from the speed due single rank. I remeber Jörg said that 64GB is not necessary but just to be on the safe site.

I would like to put an order in the following week, so if you and others have any suggestions, it would be genuilly great. Also I am not which motherboard to choose. I have two m2 SSD and a "normal" one.

I found one review that showed that the 9800X3d is between 8 to 12 percent faster in MSFS2020 than the 7800X3d. This is at ultra settings; the difference is smaller at lower settings. I think that this is worth the 60$ higher price.

As for memory: I am going for 2x 32GB 6000cl28 or cl30. A single 48GB is a bit cheaper but slower. However, that is IMHO the better choice if you want to expand later. I would never fill all 4 ram slots on a high performance pc.

I noticed JayzTwoCents just did a test with a simple overclock on the 9800X3D: https://youtu.be/PDNg5KiQ8iY?si=lzjexZ6nIQH7yMGr

Poor Intel. This CPU seems to be even better than expected.

Edit: Tomshardware also reviewed the 9800X3d and there the new CPU is 16% faster than the 7800X3D in flight simulator: https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d-review-devastating-gaming-performance/2

And that's what makes it interesting, imagine a 16% uplift at stock and then also adding another 4-500MHz or more? Could be a 20%+ uplift which would be huge for MSFS.

Sound promising. I have just pre-ordered one. We'll see when they're available again. However, I am still not sure what to do with the mainboard. I need one without WIFI, since I use LAN and I think 7 additional case fans. What mainboard is good for that?

In regard to RAM I think I will go also 64GB straight (2x32GB). I think some of them you can enable XAMP without going to much into overlooking and still having highers speeds. Which one to choose?
