Very happy with Pimax Crystal Light

Featured Replies

Got the PCL today (ordered on Oct 17) and flew it with both MSFS20204 and 2024. All in all, I'm very happy and impressed!

Setup is extremely simple and straightforward, quite a breeze. I set Quality = 1.0 in Pimax app,  OpenXR scale = 100%, DLSS Balanced in 2020/2024. I can't see fps inside VR, but both 2020 and 2024 feels smoother than G2. There is only every subtle difference between DLSS Quality and Balance and I opted for Balanced for apparently higher fps. Native resolution of PCL in VR is like 4100x5000, less than G2 at 225% scale. So I think I actually get better fps in PCL than G2 with much higher image quality. PCL is also very friendly to wearing glasses, another plus.

And, I'm so pleased to find that the sweetspot in PCL is about as large as Quest 3, which is just amazing - nearly edge to edge clarity. The whole view field is almost crystal clear (guess I got great lenses too). Increased screen resolution x bigger sweetspot gives so much more details in VR than G2 - almost a bit overwhelming when I first flew the PCL. The vastly increased details in VR give a much greater sense of flying in the air. I never felt flying in VR this close to my flight IRL. It also helps a lot that PCL display has much better contrast, color and blackness than G2. That alone is a great upgrade.

I'd say at present PCL probably is right at a sweetspot. Its 2880x2880/eye resolution + great lenses easily beats the G2 and Quest 3, but still practical for 4090 to drive usable fps. Higher resolutions sounds great on paper, but at high settings the low fps kills any resolution advantages with motion blur, while at lower settings the higher screen resolution just gets wasted. Even for PCL I'd bet that it can look a lot shaper if I can reduce the motion blur by doubling the current fps without reducing the graphics settings. Hopefully 5090 will make that happen.

If I have to complain anything, the first is that PCL weights substantially more than G2. The Sudioform mod helps a lot, probably a must. FOV, at least when wearing glasses, is definitely smaller than G2, which is a little disappointing but I'm getting used to it. I'll order a new set of lense inset and see how much they help.

Oh, thanks @Dillon for recommending this great headset!

If you get a good one, enjoy it. The one I had was full of visual issues and the sweet spot was noticeably smaller than my Quest 3.

Sorry to hear that, guess I'm having a bit luck with mine. Pimax definitely can make a good/great headset based on the one I have. They probably just need to tighten up their quality control.

Yup, for sure. Panels are great, it was the lenses that were the issue in mine. Back to the Quest 3 for the time being.
