December 31, 20241 yr Silverado "place of silver" The name of Silverado is associated with wealth, value, exploration, and the frontier spirit of the American West. So today's flight will take us to the Northwestern part of Nevada ending south in Las Vegas. We will be following HWY 95 south all the way looking at the different mines and such There are multiple gold and silver mines along the way, including: The Getchell Mine WP#3 Is an underground gold mine in the Potosi Mining District of Humboldt County, Nevada, on the east flank of the Osgood Mountains, 35 miles northeast of Winnemucca. Prospectors Edward Knight and Emmet Chase discovered gold in 1933 and located the first claims in 1934. With the financial backing of Noble Getchell and George Wingfield, the Getchell Mine, Inc. was organized in 1936 and the mine was brought into production in 1938. Hawthorne Nevada KATH Hawthorne became a county seat, when Mineral County was created. In 1926, a destructive munitions explosion in the East caused the Navy to select Hawthorne for a new ammunition depot. Silver Dyke WP#10 This ghost town is located in the Mina area, along with the Poinsettia Ghost Mining Camp. The road to the Silver Dyke Mine site is rocky and can be impassable near the mine. Candelaria Mine WP#11 This former silver mine is located in central west Nevada, just off the paved highway that connects Reno and Las Vegas. The Candelaria Mining District was historically Nevada's richest silver mining district, producing an estimated 22 million ounces of silver from the late 1880s to 1954. Reclamation efforts have been underway since 1998, including re-contouring and seeding the mine dumps, and rinsing and seeding the heap leach piles. Tonopah West WP#17 This active silver exploration project is located along US Highway 95, about 350 km northwest of Las Vegas. The project is part of the Tonopah silver district, which produced 174 million ounces of silver and 1.8 million ounces of gold from 1900 to 1930. Particulars: The Flight is 556 miles with 10 stops.
