Best texture resolution setting to use P3Dv5?

Recommended Posts

So I was reading about the texture resolution adjustment (the slider) in the World section of the settings menu and I was learning that setting it higher than is required can cause problems.  I've run into some issues myself, and I also would like to be able to decrease VRAM if it's not necessary to keep it set at 7 meters since I've also learned that P3Dv5 does not like using over 8 GB of RAM regardless if my GPU can handle it, and it will usually crash.  I've read it's always best to not set it higher than is necessary for scenery.

The problem is some scenery doesn't specify what is the best resolution setting to use and some scenery's use a mixture of different resolutions for different textures.  I like to fly with Orbx scenery as well as with photoscenery from several different developers.  I've read that MegaSceneryEarth uses 1 meter for many of it's scenery's and 60 cm for it's 4x ultra high res scenery and I've also read that even 30 cm is also fairly common.

Is there any reason to set the texture resolution slider higher than 30 cm?  I swear I read somewhere in an Orbx manual that it should be set to 7 cm but then I read that Orbx landclass scenery is 1 meter.  I want to make sure I'm being able to see all my scenery in it's highest possible detail but not have it set too high.

I would really appreciate any advice for properly setting this adjustment.

Thank you.

I tested the resolution at all settings and settled on 30cm.  I saw no perceptible difference between 7cm and 30cm.

I recall that 60cm looks OK as well.

Our eyes can only detect differences down to a certain resolution, so setting it lower makes no difference, really.

There were some Orbx sceneries (e.g. YRBM)  from Jarrad that stated 7cm/pixel ground texture resolution. He did also mention that by setting the texture slider res to 7cm , even if you have a lower res scenery such as 15cm or 30cm, there will be no impact by having that slider set higher.

Thank you both for your input, I really appreciate it.  I think I will just stick to going no higher than 30cm resolution for scenery that I'm not sure about as dave suggested.

There is a noticeable impact by setting it higher than necessary.  For one thing, it increases VRAM used and P3Dv5 does not like using more than 8 GB of VRAM even though my GPU can handle 16 GB of VRAM so I have to be careful when I have a lot of very high quality scenery enabled, 8 GB can be used very quickly, especially if I have landclass textures set to use the 1024x1024 size textures and if I use certain cityscape scenery's like Drzewiecki Design's Chicago plus the airports for example.

I also notice a problem when setting the texture resoluton slider too high if I am using MegaSceneryEarth + Nuvecta autogen, the autogen will have this strange (and very annoying) flickering effect.  It can also affect performance as well in my experience.
