RAM Upgrade opinions

Featured Replies

I'm currently looking at possibly upgrading my RAM from 32gb to 64gb and speed from 2666mhz to 3600mhz (around £110 on Amazon currently)

I'm running an I9-10900k with an RTX 3090 on an ASUS ROG STRIX Z-490-E Gaming motherboard.

System is around 4 years old now.

MSFS2020 performs pretty well, settings are high to Ultra pushing FPS to 40 to 60 with Frame Generation in 4K.

I know this isn't the latest hardware, but don't really want to go for a full replacement PC just yet.

I figured a RAM upgrade may just give me a little boost for a smallish price.

My questions is, what kind of improvements (if any) could I possibly see?

Is it even worth upgrading?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I would be interested in opinions as well, I'm thinking of upgrading  my RAM from 32 to 64 and my 3060 to 4060 as a stop gap until my budget permits a new build. From what I've been reading VRAM in the GPU seems to be more crucial than onboard RAM, particularly in preventing stutters, unfortunately the 40 series GPU mostly only have 8gb RAM. You'd think though that doubling the board RAM would have to improve performance.

If you want to increase your RAM, it is generally best to replace your current RAM modules and get 2x32GB modules.
Adding 2 modules to your existing RAM will cause a bigger strain on the memory controller and be more difficult to run stable. Usually that is solved by running the RAM at a lower speed which is probably not what you want.

For 2020 I don't see it being worth it.

If you run 2024 I'd say it's worth it as that sim easily eats over 32 GB ram with higher settings.
