Father/Son getting started

Featured Replies

My son and I built a beast of a computer recently and have MSFS 2000.

Before I upgrade to 2024, I have a few basic (lol) questions.

The MSFS tutorials are a joke; why spend so much money on flight avionics and not have better tutorials?  oh well.

My old Janes flight manuals (came with the sim) were over 100 pages thick.

With the Cessna 152 (which we want to master before jumping into digital), we can easily fly from New Haven to JFK.

What we don't like is it has a glide path which is kinda cheating.  How can I turn this off, and if I do, how can we get vectors from the control tower to line us up on the correct runway?

Also looking for navigation planning as MS doesn't seem to have a good planning system in place.  I see a lot of people use littleNavmap, Is that still relevant?

I know there are a lot of posts for tutorials, but there are hundreds if not more and it is overwhelming.

One thing I hate and struggle with is taxing before and after landing not knowing where to go.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Welcome to Avsim.  I do not have MS2020 or 2024, I still use FSX.  You will not find the in depth, printed manuals with any of today's flight sims like we had with the old sims.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Welcome! I think there's something in the Options>Assistance settings that enables/disables this. I can't remember the actual name.

I think MSFS ATC allows you to request vectors, but you need an IFR flightplan. Otherwise, it will simply give you airfield direction and distance. I never used it.

Yes.

If you have still FSX or FS9, try these tutorials first (the in-built ones by Rod Machado), and then carry all the knowledge you gain to MSFS.

Totally agree about the tutorials, they don’t really teach real-world procedures.
