Running ASX and FEX?

Recommended Posts

Guest triangle

Hi allConsidering using the FEX cloud textures in conjuntion with ActiveSky X (for weather gen). Is anyone else doing this and, if so, can you elucidate on your experience and how you have enabled both running simultaneously (I also use X Graphics and am wondering how I ensure FSX uses the FEX cloud textures rather than the X Graphics textures)? Thanks in advanceAndrew

1. ASX has a "feature" that will load the X Graphics cloud textures automatically if they are installed. DESELECT this option in ASX so the X Graphics textures won't "try" to be loaded.2. After doing #1 above, use the FEX interface to install the selected texture sets from FEX into FSX. This will make sure you have the FEX textures installed, and not any rogue X Graphics ones in FSX.3. After starting FSX, run ASX to load the real-world weather. FSX will then use the FEX textures installed in FSX for your cloud displays.Note: FEX should NOT be running while FSX (or ASX) is running. After you install the FEX textures, CLOSE FEX, then run FSX and ASX. Yoiu can close FEX manually, or by using the "Start FSX" button in FEX after the texture installs (FEX will shut down first, then start FSX). Then start FSX (if needed, depending on how you closed FEX), then Active Sky X.

The above will work but you can also simply UNcheck any textures in X Graphix Options, and it will only load what you have selected.XP Pro SP2-FSX SP2AMD FX60-8800GTS-2 Gigs RAMFEX-GEX-UTUSA-FSGenesis-and a bunch of other stuffComputer optomized by www.fs-gs.com

I use FEX for clouds and water, XGraphics for sky, lighting, etc based on weather, and also the various airport ground textures.

I have both and rarely use ASX. ASX is an exceptionally well written program and provides very realistic (within the limitations of FS) weather depictions. I could never get it to work via simmconnect on my client without significant stuttering when updating weather stations. Plus, ASX's fidelity requires a lot of time to download, resolve and update weather stations when installed on my FSX server. Some developers attempt to cram so many features into a utility program, that it begins to dominate and distract from the simulation. :) I would be happier with a weather program that sticks to the weather and does not mess with ground, cloud and water textures, radar etc.Programs such as FEX and GEX do a cleaner and better job for my needs. I really

If you want real weather, ASX is the way to go. I have had no performance hit or stuttering using ASX with either XG or FEX if the system is properly set up. I mainly use XG for roads and airport textures and FEX for clouds. Also recommend GEX and UTX along with FSGenesis landclass.VicQ6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.65Evga 680i A1 with P31 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioned for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx XG 174.74 702/1620/792Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyHannsG 28" @ 1920x1200 & Viewsonic 22" @ 1600x1050Visit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpg

>Hi,>>Active Sky X should always be run before starting FSX.>>Jim>>http://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpg>http://www.hifisim.com/Yup. My bad there. In fact, that's the way I do it, 'cos I never use the "Start FSX" button in FEX. Had a brain-reversal when I typed my first reply. I was thinking about the "Start FSX" button in FEX when I typed it. I manually close FEX, then start ASX, then FSX. Duh!I shouldn't type forum replies when I get home from work at 4:30 AM. To much previous coffee and a scattered brain. ;-)
