Domino's Pizza, Australia's tallest Mountain, and a B717...

Featured Replies

When I used to live in Ohio and often visit friends and acquaintances in the neighboring state, Michigan, up north, I now recall that Domino's Pizza was then a household name, with locations easily found on busy streets and street corners (especially around the respective university campuses). This is because Domino's Pizza traces its roots to the state of Michigan, with its (corporate) headquarters still in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which, btw, is also where the University of Michigan (along with its Wolverines...🙂...) is located. I distinctly recall from many moons ago, being on the Ann Arbor Campus, several times, to be in attendance for the famous Ohio State-Michigan rivalry college game...exciting times when the healthy diet of (Domino's) Pizzas and Brews was the norm...🙂...

I am no longer so much a Pizza lover or consumer...🙂... (since I need to keep certain (pesky) blood metabolites under control...🙂...). Nonetheless, I came across Domino's Pizza, today, in the least expected way. First, I thought of flying the Boeing 717, having spotted, since a while, the version that's available in the (MSFS) Marketplace. So, I picked it up today along with a set of add-on liveries for it. Within this repaint pack, I found the (orange colored) Jetstar Airways livery featuring "Domino's Pizza Puffection" branding. I didn't know that my one-time so-familiar, university campus (originated) Pizza chain of the U.S. Midwest is, in fact, the biggest pizza franchise business far away in the other extreme of the world...in the "Land Down Under", Australia...🙂...with apparently 700 stores on the continent...Oh well...

Regarding the a/c, you might recall that B717 was TFDi Design's first ever SIM product for FSX/P3D, and a good one too. Coming out of nowhere, TFDi set a commendable opening example (and a proven track record) with their B717. Since then, they have gone on to create the MD-11 in multiple SIM platforms (including MSFS). I used to regularly fly that TFDi B717 (from cold & dark to engine shutdown), which was one of my favorite SIM a/c. This 717 here, though not matching the system fidelity of the TFDi B717, is visually attractive, and (to some extent) fulfilled my long-held interest in this (unique) twinjet...until a better version becomes available (hopefully from TFDi).

B717 is an a/c that has its roots in the classic (Douglas) DC-9 heritage and was called MD-95 by McDonnell Douglas. The MD-95 was launched in 1995 and finished in 1999. Ironically, at the mid-point of this interval, in 1997, Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas. Therefore, the a/c came to be called Boeing 717. So, with Douglas airframe, McDonnell Douglas avionics, and Boeing finish, it's indeed a rather atypical (composite) specimen of a narrow-body (tail mounted) twinjet airliner, that I've always found fascinating to fly in our SIM.

For this post, I've flown the B717 a short distance of about 300 miles, from Canberra (YSCB) to Melbourne (YMML), overflying the significant mountain ranges between these two cities, notably including the highest mountain in all of Australia, Mount Kosciuszko (see images and EFB Map below). It was a fun flight...in a fun SIM a/c that feels a bit different than the norm...and offers an off-the-beaten-track flying experience in our virtual world...

The B717, last unit of which was produced in 2006 nearly 20 years ago, was built in the famous (and original) Douglas Aircraft Co. plant in Long Beach, California....the same plant that had produced many iconic aircraft in aviation history (civil and military)...including the B-17 Bomber, C-47, DC-10, MD-80, C-17 Globemaster etc.

Hope you enjoy this collection of images of this (Douglas / McDonnell Douglas / Boeing) amalgamation of a unique a/c in the (special) Domino's Pizza livery of Jetstar Airways (Australia). Jetstar (Australia) had (historically) operated 14 Boeing 717s in its fleet, of which this (VH-YQH) is the one that carried the Domino's Pizza signature...

Thanks for viewing...!

Thanks, rmeier...!

The gently rising (en route) mountains in the southwest direction of Canberra looked quite pretty indeed... in the early morning light...🙂...
