SU3 - Streamed aircraft not showing in Free Flight list

Featured Replies

This is driving me to distraction.  It affects addons too, but let me keep it simple and only talk about the MSFS2024 stock aircraft.

Ever since SU3 was updated, the Free Flight list, which is alphabetical in its display sequence, is missing half the aircraft!  It varies, but, at the moment, models whose names start with J and later.

To illustrate -

I boot up the sim and click on Free Flight: 'All' gives me this:

Everything after a couple of Just Flight models are missing.  You can see that the slide bar at the bottom is not near the end - but there are not thumbnails or click spots for the missing aircraft.

If I click on 'Airplane', it sometimes gives me a couple more:

So, I then go to 'My Library' to see what is going on.  And I choose the stock ASOBO streamed aircraft list, and there they all are - proudly declaring themselves as 'Streamed':

So let's fly the stock MSFS2024 Pilatus.  Yes - that's 'streamed'....but, oh drat....that starts with a 'P' so I can't boot it up!!?!

The same happens with my Community Folder models.  I've even tried - and succeeded - in Downloading and initiating the missing models...but they still do not appear on the Free Flight list.

It gets more bizarre that this, too - but before I go into that, has anyone got ANY idea what's going on here...and is ANYONE else seeing the same problem?  I can't seen anything in the 'official' forum relating to this....

I think I've sorted it.  I wasn't accounting for the fact that the sim boot up would take a further 2 hours after the initial 'ready to fly' screen.  I lie - the 2nd successful boot up took 3 hours.  And that was even though the 'My Library' list showed every aircraft loaded and streaming after a modest 2-3 minute boot up.

What a frustrating and completely wasted weekend.

Nope.  The good news was that the final try last night got me my whole list of streamed and community installed aircraft.  Great.

Today - there are even fewer than yesterday.  So, so far, I have:

- checked that I am on a geographically close server (W Europe) and that the speed is OK (c 29ms)

- a full delete and reinstall of MSFS2024 now onto the root C : Drive

-  community folder as MSFS has loaded as default, again C : Drive

- a MSFS bootup that tells me that all the ASOBO models are streaming and all of my activated 3rd Party or 2020 aircraft are installed

- A perfectly normal bootup in a decent time

I click on 'Free Flight':

- I get a list containing perhaps 20% of my actually owned/streamed models.  Alphabetically (eg A for Airbus) up to around E

I click on 'Airplane':

- it gives me more aircraft...now up to, say J for Just Flight, maybe now 30% of the aircraft that I 'own'

I check on 'My Library':

- All of the Asosbo aircraft in my package show as 'Streamed'  - but 70% are not showing on the Free Flight boot up list

- All of the activated community aircraft show as 'enabled' - but 70% are not showing on the Free Flight boot up list

- I've even Downloaded some of the aircraft.  But if they are in the 70% that alphabetically are not on the list, they do not appear

And that's it.

If I reboot, sometimes it gives me more of my models, but so far today, never more than 50%

If I plug my desktop directly into my full fibre router, it makes no difference.

I am going to post the above in the FS Forum but - based on there having been no feedback here of fellow sufferers - I fear I will be '1 Vote' - which means it 'aint going to be fixed.

And the irony - I'm LOVING the few aircraft that ASOBO is letting me use.  Unfortunately, most of the ones I WANT to fly have committed the heinous crime of having a name that starts with any letter after J!!!

In the meantime, back to MSFS2020.  Really unhappy about this...

This is not an issue to be solved on a community forums.

Yes - I agree.

I suppose I was hoping that there might be a 'Oh yes, I had that...have you remembered to xyz' etc..

But clearly not.

It must be something squiffy in my particular system, although MSFS2024 was running fine before (I didn't partake in the beta process) and the only change was the mandatory and automatic SU3 update, which appeared to be a straightforward 'hands free' process.  But that update did do some weird stuff, which may or may not be related.

I'll try their support.

Try deleting your settings in the cloud.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

I've finally sussed it, I reckon.   I had one last try at a full sim delete, move the drive and full reinstall...and chance would have it I then loaded the specific addon that I think has been causing the problem - the iFly 737 Max 8!

I've been flying the wonderful iFly 737 Max 8 since it came out in MSFS2024 a short while ago.    It's been working great in SU2...but clearly there's a clash in SU3, at least on my system.  I'll go on their Discord and flag it up to them.  Hopefully they will be able to put a fix in - it is a really splendid modelling of an iconic aircraft...

I think there is still one other addon that now clashes somewhere in my community folder content, but its impact is less - I'll flag it when I suss it (trial and error - I'll take the addons back out one at a time).

No.

I have that as well and everything works normally.

Hmmm...in that case I'll have to wait until something else seizes it all up....

I contacted Flight1 on Discord and got a quick response (I'm very impressed with these folks).  I'm not the only one, apparently, although it clearly isn't a general problem.

The Flight1 guy did suggest a workround to try...and it works!  It is to switch to Developer Mode, Tools and then Aircraft Selector.

You can only do that while a flight is actually active - so I picked one of the 30% of models that are actually visible (a Cessna 172).  When you then switch to Aircraft Selector - there they all are!!!  The 70% of ASOBO stock models, various 3rd Part AND the iFly Max 8.  I chose that one, and clicked on 'Load' and the Cessna turned into the iFly Max 8.

Couldn't fly in this state because all the settings were Cessna-ified.  But I could then close the flight and now, in the Free Flight menu, the iFly Max 8 photo was still there as 'last aircraft flown'.  So I just chose it again, loaded it up Cold and Dark at EGBB and did a full flight and landing to EGCC - with everything working as it should.

So I can, at least, now fly the missing aircraft (and overall, I'm very pleased with SU3) and I'll see if logging it on the FS 'official' forum as a bug prompts any reaction/action.

As always, thanks for the input folks 🙂

OK - this is bizarre.

Before I outline it, just a quick update:  yes, other folks are seeing this - but not many, it seems; I've logged it as a potential bug on the FS site; it's been moved from 'Bug Reporting' to 'User Support' on the FS site (which is normal with this sort of thing).

First - there is a workaround.  The 'Search Aircraft' box, when you've opened the Free Flight list will find the aircraft that is missing from the thumbnails.  All of the aircraft are there in your system (as confirmed if you go into 'My Library') - they are just not showing on the Free Flight list and so can't be chosen in the normal way.

But last night, I came across a real weird one.   I loaded up the iFly Max8 using the workaround above and had a splendid VR flight.  I tweaked the graphics settings a touch and had a splendid sharp, smooth flight...this aspect of SU3 I love!  I closed that flight and wondered if it would be equally smooth and sharp in another aircraft.  So - still in VR - I went back into the Free Flight menu....AND ALL AIRCRAFT WERE THERE WITH THEIR THUMBNAILS!

Great, I thought.  It's fixed itself!

I came out of VR, still on the Free Flight list page....and all models beyond J for Just Flight (see photo above) were missing again.

So, still on the same page, I switched back into VR.  THEY WERE BACK!!

Same page, switched into 2D THEY WERE GONE!!!

Well...my problem is solved - I'll just do everything from initial bootup in VR rather than in 2D.  But ASOBO will have to try hard to convince me that this is a 3rd Party's problem and not a quirk in the SU3 coding...

So, recent progress - I think a member over on the FS forum has sussed it.  And I'm pretty sure it is a MSFS2024 SU3 bug and nothing to do with add-ons.

He posted last night on the FS forum that it seems to be related to Windowed Mode.  I have verified his results and this is worth a try:

- As above, I realised a number of days ago that in VR the Free Flight list is complete.  He has verified that.

- Additionally, he has realised that in 2D, if he is in windowed mode and the window is small, then the list is truncated to quite a large degree.  I have verified that.  I lose around 70% of the Free Flight list when the window is reduced to its smallest

- He has also noted that the larger the window is on his screen, the more aircraft show on the list.  I have verified that.  When the window is stretched to pretty much full screen size, many more of the Free Flight list now appear and I am probably only missing around 10% of them.

- He has noted that if he switches from Windowed Mode to Full Screen mode, then the complete list shows.  And I have been also able to verify that.

Over on FS, I have had my knuckles rapped for asking if this can be confirmed as a bug (I crossed some protocol, although still a bit bemused quite what) but, presumably, as more users come across the problem Asobo will be able to verify the issue themselves and put a fix in.
