my fault, I should have known the Maule was about to land at Bar Yehuda 🤣

The lowest altitude airport in the world is:

✈️ Bar Yehuda Airfield

  • Elevation: about −1,240 feet (−378 meters) below sea level
  • Location: Near the Dead Sea

This makes it the lowest airport on Earth by elevation. It’s a small airfield mainly used for private and regional aviation rather than major commercial flights.

For comparison (commercial airports below sea level):

  • ✈️ Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
    • Elevation: about −11 feet (−3 meters)
    • One of the busiest international airports below sea level

So while Schiphol is the most famous major low-altitude airport, Bar Yehuda Airfield holds the absolute record worldwide.

Density altitude glitch maybe

ATC does not directly base climb/descend instructions on density altitude. Pilots do.

✈️ Who handles what?

ATC (Air Traffic Control)
Controllers issue instructions based on:

  • Separation (keeping aircraft safely apart)
  • Traffic flow and sequencing
  • Airspace structure and procedures

They use pressure altitude (via standard altimeter settings), not performance-based altitude like density altitude.

Even then, 240 ft AGL seems awfully low for an MVA... 😉
