Hi

I am using FSX with Windows 10 as the operating system. In FSX sometimes in the background I hear a sound from windows 10, for example the sound when you hold a button on your keyboard without releasing it, windows gives an alert, unfortunately this sometimes appears intermittently when FSX is running and I cannot figure out what it is.

I would be grateful for any thoughts and/or suggestions.

Fixing Audio Issues in FSX

Adjusting Windows Sound Settings

• Open the Windows Control Panel, go to Hardware and Sound, and click on Sound.

• Right-click your default playback device (speakers or headphones) and select Properties.

• Go to the Advanced tab and change the Default Format to 24-bit, 48000 Hz or 24-bit, 44100 Hz.

• Go to the Enhancements tab and check the box to Disable all enhancements (if available).

Managing In-Game Sound and Performance

• Press Alt inside FSX, go to Options, then Settings, and select Sound.

• Switch your audio device from <default primary device> to your specific hardware device.

• Lower your slider settings for Voice or ATC if the crackling triggers during radio chatter.

• Reduce heavy graphic or scenery density settings to lower overall CPU strain during flight.

In my opinion, here is what needs to be done — system sounds should be disabled. Right‑click on the speaker icon in the taskbar => System Sounds => on the 'Sounds' tab, in the drop‑down menu select 'No Sounds' => Apply.

Are you sure that you're not running out of VAS? That is the same sound that occurs to warn you that you are almost out of VAS.

I didn’t think about that to be honest, I’ve noticed only twice this happened using PMDG B7777-200LR combined with Aerosoft EGLL and AI Traffic set at 27% but quite congested at EGLL.

Would removing unused Airport Add ons assist? So far I have the following Add ons installed.

The PMDG 777 is a VAS hog, and it will use a lot, so I think that you are very likely running out of VAS. Especially if you are also using high-quality airports and other scenery with it. You should disable any addons that you don't need for your flights to help minimize the amount of VAS being used. You may have to use only default airports when flying the PMDG 777 to reduce the amount of VAS used.

It's no longer available on the internet so I made it available to download from my cloud. There are other methods for monitoring VAS usage, but this is the easiest way.

Tips to reduce VAS usage:

1. Disable any third-party addons in the scenery library that you don't need for your flight.

2. Reduce FSX scenery settings like Autogen Density, Texture Resolution, Water Effects, Special Effects, Cloud Draw Distance, Cloud Coverage Density, Aircraft AI, Airport Vehicle AI, Road Vehicles (cars, trucks, etc.), Boat and Ship traffic. Also disable Ground Shadows. All of these settings affect how much VAS is used during a flight.

3. Avoid using high resolution textures when possible. For example, if you use custom textures for the sky, clouds, water, default airport buildings, runways, etc., you should not use textures that are higher than 1024 x 1024 (1K). High resolution textures like 4K use a huge amount of VAS. This also goes for aircraft as well. When possible, try to avoid using aircraft that have 4K textures. An aircraft that uses all 4K textures will use a massive amount of VAS.

No problem. I also want to share another link with you that you will find very helpful that I recommend you read when you have time. This is a good old article which was written by PMDG that explains VAS in detail: VAS management - stopping out of memory (OOM) errors

Since FSX is a 32 Bit program, understanding VAS and how to manage it will help you to have a much better experience with FSX. This is especially true if you like to use complex, high fidelity scenery like me.

I do like FSX and tried MSFS2024 but couldn’t get use to it, sadly no pop outs for the FMS and heavily reliant on the internet

There's nothing wrong with still using FSX. Different people look for different things in a flight simulator, everyone has their own tastes. I've used many different flight simulators, but FSX (Steam version) is one that I always keep coming back to. I enjoy both using modern sims and legacy sims depending on my mood. I originally bought the box version of FSX way back in 2007 🙂

The thing with modern sims, both MSFS 2020 & 2024 as well as X-Plane 11 & 12, are designed to use the virtual cockpit for everything. In a way, it does add more immersion, but I also sometimes like being able to use 2D panels when I'm using FSX or P3D depending on the particular aircraft I want to fly.

On another note if you use PMDG 777 in FSX is there a recommended brake tweak to use as I find using even Autobrake 2 with a landing speed of 138kts the aircraft deceleration is quick ……looking for a more realistic braking

2 is the most common setting used for normal length runways that a Boeing 777 uses, but you can always try 1 and see how it goes if you think 2 is too much. It all depends on runway length. For longer runways you can use an autobrake setting of 1 or 2, and for shorter runways you should use 3 or 4 depending on how short.

I don't know of any tweaks to adjust this other than trying different autobrake settings.
