February 28, 200323 yr I was assigned runway 6L at KLAX, but requested 7L. OK. When I was cleared for takeoff on 7L, I was also given a "fly heading 055". As soon as the wheels left the ground, the controller was on me for not flying the correct heading. If this is a common procedure within RC3.01, I think a little more time needs to go by before issuing scoldings.Thanks. February 28, 200323 yr Richard,In Tower's instructions, you should be given the altitude when to turn. For example, "United 232, winds 090 at 10, leaving 3600 feet fly heading 055, cleared for take-off." So when you are at 3600', you should turn. RC shouldn't yell at you immediately for not turning.I have not had an immediate bust for not turning. I have been busted for turning BEFORE I was told to, however.Have you checked your altimeter before take-off and can you reproduce this problem?
February 28, 200323 yr Author Thanks for the reply. My altimeter was set to 29.91 -- I had no weather set -- just a bright, clear Southern California day.I was given no altitude at which to start my turn. "US Air 99, runway 7l, cleared for takeoff, fly heading 055".I am busy the rest of the day, but I will try to reproduce tomorrow and save the files (which ones exactly) if you want me to. March 1, 200323 yr The magvar at KLAX is -14 degrees, almost the same as you are off here. What planner are you using? It may be sending bad data to the flt pln.Best, Rob
March 1, 200323 yr "...you should be given the altitude when to turn.."I have 414 IFR flights now with RCv3, never once have I heard this type of conditional call at takeoff. If this indeed does exist, can you please post the name of the .wav file(s) so that I may check my installation? Also, as a side note, I have noticed that the controllers are also have very limited randomness. I can guess what the next controller voice will be with probably a 85% chance of being correct. Only twice have I heard the female controller voice, both flights exceeded 2.5 hours and both times I cycled through the now familiar controller sets. I would venture to say that there are contoller voice sets that I not heard yet, nor may never hear only becuase my flights are of 90 minutes or less most of the time. March 1, 200323 yr Mike,I know the next controller with 100% certainty since RC picks the first one at random then cycles through them sequentially. Given the number of sectors, from ATIS to CD, Ground, Tower, Dep, Centers, ATIS, APC, Tower, and Ground, the chances are very good you'll hear all of the sets on most flights. If you're hearing a female controller, please pass that one to me since RC has no female controllers.
March 1, 200323 yr My apologies. I forgot you only get "Leaving (altitude) fly heading..." during peak periods and with certain parallel runway conditions.I believe RC expects you to start the turn at about 1500' AGL otherwise. If you are getting busted before that, make a dat before takeoff.
March 1, 200323 yr Ah... thanks on the cycling of controllers, I assumed that they were chosen at random. Some time after I posted about the 'female' I sort of new that it would be a confusing point. I tired to come back and edit the post. I should have stated 'voice set 9' as that set was replaced by my wife's voice set. I tried to go back and edit but no go (too late). I have placed my voice set as a pilot, and my wife started on a pilot set but burned out about midway. One of the issues that occurs to me after reading your post is that I dont utilize all controllers via RC. I use the MSATC for ground ops (for AI interactions). Maybe this is limiting in a way with RC doing a 'cycle' vs 'random' approach? What you say does make sense, but it does seem that the cycle gets repetative. Again, not a big deal, just somthing I seem to notice a lot. :-)Any thoughts on my other question? March 1, 200323 yr Mike,> Any thoughts on my other question? If you can reproduce it, save a dat before getting take-off clearance. Are you sure you're not getting busted after 1500' AGL (see my correction below).
March 2, 200323 yr Author Hi, Scott.I tried to reproduce my incident six times today at six different times so that the traffic would be different. To no avail. Each time the controller clearly said, "Fly the runway heading, cleared for takeoff".The only thing I did note was this. I departed KLAX 7L for VCV (heading about 035). After contacting departure, I was told to fly heading 035, right on course! About 30 seconds later I was told to fly heading 065, and then about 30 seconds later, I was told to fly heading 035. No reason ("traffic", for example) was given. I guess those changes brought me "dead" on course, but I suggest a little more course flexibility to avoid twisting and turning, if that's possible. Or, maybe that's real life?Other than that, my flights from KLAX to KDEN were right out of the book.Thanks. March 2, 200323 yr Author I am using FSNavigator 4.51 with the very latest air data as my planner. Exported to FS2002, and then loaded through FS2002 flight planner. I usually chose a gate for a starting point. I have never had any problems with this method. Thanks for your suggestion. March 2, 200323 yr Commercial Member tat was an s-turn, based on the time of day, and size of the airport JD Read my blog
March 2, 200323 yr Dick,As JD said, that was a textbook S-turn you were given, and it was for traffic separation. You must have been flying at a peak period. The "fly heading" part from Tower is correct, as I posted below in "correction". I had a brain freeze when I said you should always get a "...when leaving...". I had a further brain freeze when I said Tower checks you at 1500' AGL. It's actually about 200'.There's nothing off with the flights you did, as they all seem to be by the book.
