IAP approach question

Hi Luigi,I don't understand why you couldn't get down to 3,000ft once you've asked for an ILS approach. You should be about 30-40 miles from the airport when you contact Approach.RC will tell you to maintain 8000ft approx but you can just ignore that and start down. To give you an idea of my flight my cruise level was FL330 and by AKUTI I was down to FL200. By D316M I was down to 4,100ft. I don't understand why you couldn't get down unless there are more differences between v3 and v4 than I'm aware of.Cheers,

Ray (Cheshire, England).

And with V3 it does not hurt to use the approach NOTAMS option to fly your own vertical path with only controller guidance. You just have to be aware on your own what obtruction clearance altitudes are required - the controller will not say anything.Flying an IAP usually means having the plate available for the terminal and STAR (if available). The STAR will give crossing restrictions and minimum altitudes for each leg and the terminal plate will give the 25 nm radius obstruction clearance plus the altitudes within 10 nm on the vertical profile.

Ohhhh....yeahhhhhhhhhh.There is one big difference from you and me: you are experieced pilots whilst i'm a "perfectible" rookie.I'll retry that pleasant flight, and i'll be more careful...thanksLuigi ;-)

Hi Luigi,We all started as rookies :-) There's only one way to gain experience. Fly and... learn from your mistakes because we've all made them.Good luck!
