  1. Yes, well, I wasn't 'finding fault' (that sounded so negative) so much as registering my disappointment that this useful feature has gone - not an improvement to AVSIM for sure. Did it really use up so much of AVSIM's resources? Having contributed to the new server after the last hack and crash, I thought we'd be good for years - but of course I am not sitting where you are so am probably being too optimistic. Maybe no one else has bothered to 'protest' - and maybe the two of us who have really are the only ones who found the listing really useful. Well, I am sorry you've limited it, but if no else is bothered, then of course that particular feature has gone for good I guess. Pity - but I'll doubtless survive! M. :-)
  2. Just posting a 'bump' as the forum shows that zero people have even looked at this post. Could be, I suppose, but usually someone at least reads the threads here within the first few hours, even if no one replies. So just testing by posting a reply to my own post - or maybe something is wrong?? M.
  3. OK, forget I spoke then!! Far be it from me to find fault with anything you do at AVSIM! I have posted enough praise in the past 11 years that I might be allowed a small, disappointed comment, I'd have thought! Martin
  4. Well Tom, the answer's good, but the action is dubious (IMHO). I am sure I am not the only one (obviously not, as I am not the O/P: where does the "99.9% of users" finding this a waste of resources come from? I doubt 99.9% of users are even aware of the system resources needed to run whatever page of AVSIM they select) who found being able to find all my previous posts, so as to keep up to date, useful - I had even bookmarked the page on my bookmark toolbar. I do subscribe to most of my posts, but even so... So, as a long-standing member can I just register my 'no vote' to what you have done. Isn't there another way to save on 'system loads'?? Thanks for the reply.. Martin
  5. This is the help with the forums section.. anyone at AVSIM gonna help then? Thanks, M. :-)
  6. I've been reading up on Gol & Varig, including the Wikipedia article, but am still not clear on one point. Maybe someone can advise.. Do Gol still fly any flights with the Varig name and/or logo on the aircraft (presumably the new logo with orange in it), or are all flights now under the 'Gol Transportes Aéreos' name and livery? In other words, do any a/c flying now carry the word 'Varig' on the fuselage? If so, which aircraft are still being flown under the Varig name? As far as I can see, Gol have only 737-700s & -800s? Thanks, Martin
  7. KFC... It'd be nice to think of a cargo airline dedicated to transporting Kentucky Fried Chicken around the world, wings on the wing - but I do know that 'Purolator' are a Canadian transport/courier company! The JustFlight 727-200 Professional package comes with a livery for 'KFC Purolator Cargo', but Googling finds no other reference to them as a current or defunct air cargo carrier. Anyone know anything about them? I have a note from somewhere (I am not sure where I found it now) that they are/were based at CYLW & CYHM... Who is 'KFC' here? http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=27742 Again, Googling only gets chicken references (of course).. Thanks, Martin
  8. That sounds familiar, and was probably what I was struggling to remember! I was clearly associating L & R Ign with L & R engines... Thanks for the explanation.
  9. No, 737s don't have magnetos, of course! Bad example to print (from Wikipedia), but you see the gist. OK, so L & R just for 'testing'; I am doing the 'right' thing in leaving the ignition on 'Both' it seems then. Thanks
  10. Hi, This is related to Boeing 737s, but could apply to other aircraft of course. Simple question - as per title of the thread: the engine ignition selector switch has 'Left Ign', 'Right Ign' and 'Both' options. What in fact is the correct usage, as per real world flying, when starting engines? I had once thought you switched to L Ign when starting the left engine and R Ign for the right (but then what was 'both' used for?), but that is not the case I think. Googling found this (Wikipedia): Ignition Switch - Activates the magnetos by opening the grounding or 'p-lead' circuit; with the p-lead ungrounded the magneto is free to send its high-voltage output to the spark plugs. In most aircraft the ignition switch also applies power to the starter motor during engine start. In piston aircraft engines, the battery does not generate the spark for combustion. This is accomplished using devices called magnetos. Magnetos are connected to the engine by gearing. When the crankshaft turns, it turns the magnetos which mechanically generate voltage for spark. In the event of an electrical failure, the engine will continue to run. The Ignition Switch has the following positions: Off - Both magneto p-leads are connected to electrical ground. This disables both magnetos, no spark is produced. Right - The left magneto p-lead is grounded, and the right is open. This disables the left magneto and enables the right magneto only. Left - The right magneto p-lead is grounded, and the left is open. This disables the right magneto and enables the left magneto only. Both - This is the normal operating configuration, both p-leads are open, enabling both magnetos. Start - The pinion gear on the starter motor is engaged with the flywheel and the starter motor runs to turn the engine over. In most cases, only the left magneto is active (the right p-lead is grounded) due to timing differences between the magnetos at low RPMs. OK, fine, but all instructions/checklists I've ever found suggest that 'Both' is not the normal startup position - they say select Left OR Right and leave the selector there. Is that wrong (and Wikipedia correct??). In a real 737 (etc.), will the right engine actually start with the selector set to Left Ign the whole time? According to the above, why would it? Thanks, Martin
  11. Anyone know of a really good one, with functioning overhead panels etc.? Could be payware, if no freeware. I can't find one .. Many thanks, Martin
  12. (Bumping) When I go to 'My Content' why does it now say (this is new): There have been 9 items by martinlest2 (Search limited from 20-May 14) ... is this a fault or a new 'feature'? If there is a way to extend the search beyond the apparent 3 month limit, I can't find it. It's not an improvement, whatever - I used to find it really useful to locate my posts over the past ten years or more this way. Now I can't... Thanks.
  13. I am working abroad and, so as not to be totally FS-less, have brought a Dell XPS M1730, which runs FS9 pretty well. The O/S is WinXP x64. The huge advantage of this is that I can get FSHotSFX back, and my airports have all come alive with AI traffic sounds again. I had almost forgotten how good it was!! So much so, I am tempted to go back to XP on my main FS PC in the UK, when I get back there (no time soon). There will be negatives, I am sure, but I have all the drivers running OK on the XPS laptop - for my X52 and so forth. Can anyone think of a strong argument for NOT doing this? I know that XP is no longer supported.. It would be a dual boot affair - but the XP x64 would be going on to a machine that already has Win7 x64 on it. Is that doable?? (Will Google that myself too of course). If you have used FSHotSFX, you will understand why I am thinking of this! WHY can't someone produce an equivalent for FS9 that works in Win7??? It is crazy to me all the bits and pieces that have been added by developers over the years, but that there's no real replacement for FSHotSFX in Windows 7. A real, REAL shame, 'cos it sounds so, so wonderful: I have tampered with the innate FS9 AI sounds and got some improvements, but nothing approaches the dedicated FSHotSFX software... Martin
  14. Mine too - last time I looked, having been posting here for over ten years, I had several pages of topic headings displayed in My Content (when I log in and go to my posts) with hundreds of posts listed. Now it says it is only showing topics posted since May 14 2014 and there are only seven. How do I get back to how it was before, and be able to see all the topics I have started or contributed to? That was very useful.. Thanks
  15. Hi, I keep getting this error message when I load a saved .flt file, either from a shortcut or from the flt file directly. Why - any ideas anyone? I have been doing this for many years and am pretty familiar with the format when I open the flt file in a text editor. It all looks OK to me! Moreover, when Ioad the same flight from within 'Select a flight' (clicking oon fs9.exe rather than the flt file to start the programme) it loads up just fine. So why don't some flights load directly from the flt file? If the file were 'corrupt' I should surely get the same problem when I try to load it via the fs9 'select a flight' screen? Just an Fs9 glitch?? Thanks - flt file is below. 16. The key commands (from the FS9 menu) look fine - but they are all for MCP etc., there's nothing there about pause or scroll views of course. No clashes between what's in the PMDG keyboard shortcuts and the FS9 assignments, as far as I can see. Thanks, Martin
  17. Hi. Can anyone say why, when I load a PMDG 737 a/c, most of my FS9 keyboard commands don't work? 'P' no longer pauses or unpauses the sim, 'S' no longer scrolls through the views and so on - the sim is to all intents and purposes locked up. If I load a different plane, FS9 or 3rd. party (eg. a PSS Airbus), the keyboard works as normal. Try the 737 again, and the problem returns. Help appreciated. Thanks, Martin
  18. Yes, I have also merged all my other Airbuses with the PSS cockpit/CDU. Works just fine. You have to remember (if you save flights as flt files) to set up a dummy, working flight, with the PSS Airbus as the selected aircraft, then choose your livery - or start with the default Cessna and then load the Airbus. Otherwise odd things happen in flight. I can explain further if anyone wishes, but I think most will by this stage understand what I mean.
  19. I would guess it is the same - the PSS Concorde and the JF version are certainly the same plane.
  20. I really like the PSS version. There are a few minor oddities in the handling (not worth detailing here) but overall it is a pleasure to fly (you get a319/320/321). Very good CDU/FMS. Lots of liveries out there too. It's available again here: http://www.blackboxsimulation.com/blog/pss-airbus-professional-re-release/ (I adore the PSS Concorde too - it feels really classy to fly, from the sound to the modelleing and handling. But you weren't asking about that!). Martin
  21. Ok now with new drivers: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/443795-xp-64-bit-driver-for-nvidia-8700m-can-anyone-help-please/
  22. The 197 won't work with NI. Installed 307.83 and now fine - no problems so far that I can see. Frame rates OK (around 25fps) and AA working. Thanks. Martin
  23. Hi, and thanks. It looks to me however that nVidia Inspector only supports 2xx.xx drivers and above, at least as far as I can see. Someone please correct me if not. I have Googled 'nVidia Inspector' + 'supported drivers' but haven't found a list to confirm. I can try the 197.16 you indicated, but I think I'll have better luck with the 307.83. Why do you not recommend it? Thanks again.
