  1. Did anyone have ANY opinions on this topic? Thanks, LazarusLong
  2. Hi, All. Over the years, I've added quite a bit of scenery--my scenery.cfg currently has 386 layers--and am trying to figure out the best approach to maximize performance by limiting the scenery FSX will have to process. Most of my scenery is installed as per the normal install procedures though, when the scenery package allows, I will install the scenery to an alternate drive. As to photoreal scenery, it is installed one of two ways; 1) MegaScenery Earth sceneries are installed under a single folder for each state (I install the individual files separately, rather than using the autoinstall, so I can exclude tiles in certain airport/city areas where I want autogen) 2) BlueSkyScenery was installed earlier and each of their packages have their own separate folders (contributing to about 60 separate scenery layers--hey, they got installed early in the process--LOL!) So, here are my questions: 1. As to the BlueSkyScenery, is there any benefit to these ALL being in one folder, so fsx reads on scenery layer with a large number of elements)? Or is it actually better for them to be broken up into their own folders so, when FSX reads it, it is reading a larger number of layers with fewer elements each)? 2. My thought is that FSX is happier seeing fewer layers, but assuming I limited the active scenery to the given geographic area being used for that day's flights, which would be better performance-wise? Either: a. Leaving the scenery.cfg intact and just switching all "out of area" scenery layers to Active=FALSE b. Editing the base scenery.cfg for various regions: i. Taking the base scenery.cfg and then deleting the "out of area" scenery layers and saving it to a temporary file name, like scenery.cfg_USA-SE.txt or scenery.cfg_USA-NE_to_Europe.txt ii. When a given region is being flown, the existing scenery.cfg would be renamed and then the regional scenery.cfg would be put in its place; for example renaming scenery.cfg_USA-NE_to_Europe.txt to scenery.cfg iii. Of course, the original base scenery.cfg would be copied/saved to a safe place before any editing was done. My existing scenery.cfg (as a .txt file) is attached, for reference. Thanks for any thoughts/input. LazarusLong
  3. Hi, Bryan. I did the Purser voice for the FS2Crew MD-11. Am I still on the active voice roster? Thanks, Mike Pettis USA
  4. There is actually a way to have your cake...and eat it, too. There will be a small gap in immersion, but it does come close to being the best of both worlds. To set the stage, let me say that I'm trying this initially in the Chicago area--using MegasceneryEarth v2.0 Illinois and Indiana, along with FSDT KORD and FlyTampa KMDW (the ORBX angle of this will come in a few moments). Also, I fly a combination of GA and heavy iron. Each MSE state comes in the form of multiple stripes of apprx 1GB each. After the zip, it extracts to an exe, which then installs a series of BGL's to form the strip. The typical approach is to download all of the zips, extract them all and then install them all--and, voila!, you now have a state in lovely photoreal scenery. --------------------- Photoscenery looks like crap below about 3,000AGL. Considering my favorite parts of a flight are the climbout and approach, I just can't be immersed by flat, usually dull looking, non-dynamic scenery. ---------------------- This is my biggest problem with photoscenery! While KORD and KMDW will have the airport and adjacent areas modeled/populated with autogen, that 10 miles or so of the approach starts to look kinda smushed as you descend further. Soooooo, what I tried is this. 1. Starting with the first file, install a single MSE exe into a new folder (I'm using G:\Megascenery\Illinois for example) 2. Create a folder as a holding bin (in my case, G:\Megascenery\Hold) 3. Create a subfolder for each of the downloads (in my case, G:\Megascenery\Hold\1, G:\Megascenery\Hold\2, etc.) 4. Open Flight Simulator (the scenery activates automatically) and go to an airport in the state you're working with (towards the northern part; the strips appear to all start at the northern border) 5. Once at the airport, switch to the overhead view and you'll be able to see the part of the state covered by that exe. 6. Make note of any airports in that MSE strip you fly into and then exit FSX. 7. Move (not copy) all of the BGL files, except a couple/few, from the Megascenery\State folder to the holding bin folder that corresponds to the strip number). 8. Restart FSX, go to the airport you were at in the previous steps and switch to the overhead view again. You'll now get an idea of how the various files line up. 9. Swap files in and out between the MSE folder and the Holding Bin to find out which BGL files affect the airport you want autogen at/around. 10. Make a note of the BGL's that you want to exclude. 11. After you've got one exe mapped out, move the remaining files from MSE folder to the Holding Bin. 12. Repeat the process with the next strip(s), as required. After I finished this, I was able to have entire state of Illinois/Indiana covered in photoreal scenery while, at the same time, having autogen for my approach/departure areas (I'll post an image when I get back home). My only penalty? The slight break in immersion as I get close to the MSE/Autogen dividing line--a mere matter of moments!!!! Otherwise, I have no break in the illusion. ORBX As to this, I really, really love my ORBX scenery and probably won't mess with the big geographic area (like PNW). But, I will do the states I regularly fly over in MSE; giving me plenty of inflight eye candy. So, for example, because I do the KORD/KDEN to KSEA/KPDX flights, I'll probably do the Dakotas and Montana (probably won't get Nevada or Arizona, as I've already got the BlueSky Scenery for those areas), but make sure that my ORBX PNW has a higher priority so it transitions into the ORBX scenery as I fly. One final comment; though the ORBX scenery could be considered boring at altitude is some areas, I actually find it quite nice in the mountainous and plateau regions--Can't wait to fly into KJAC, once I get everything setup! :-) Mike
  5. I received the key e-mail on all three accounts, but let's play it safe and use the [email protected] account.BTW, the key didn't work. I tried opening RCv4 as Administrator and pasting it in, then followed the advice on the forums by uninstalling/reinstalling and then manually copying it in. In each case, once I clicked the key, the registration panel would go for a few seconds, then show as "unresponsive" and then disappear. Reopening RCv4.exe would just take me back to the registration page.I'll post this verbatim on the support forum; in case that's your preferred way to handle this. Thanks again for your help.Michael Pettis
  6. I just sent an e-mail to [email protected] with my alternate addresses, including my gmail address.Thanks.Mike Pettis
  7. Thanks, Ron.Yes, I already have a G-mail account, so I'll forward that to him, as well. But it should have come through at least on my work address. Comcast support is so funky that it's like trying to stop a tidal wave with a sheet.:-)Mike Pettis
  8. Hi, Guys. Not sure if another attempt was made yet, but I just wanted to let you know nothing had come through on either e-mail address yet. Thanks,Michael Pettis
  9. Thanks, Ron.I set a filter in Comcast to redirect it to another folder; hopefully that will work. The firewall shouldn't be an issue, as it's not getting to Comcast before I log in.Michael Pettis
  10. I wish I could say that's bizarre, but Comcast seems to have a way of chewing up e-mails without the courtesy of sending an alert--despite the fact that you (and others) have been manually added to my "safe" list. So, to avoid any further drama, could I ask if you could send it to both my comcast address AND my work address; [email protected] .Sorry for all of the problems and best wishes on whatever you're working on. :-)I wish I could say that's bizarre, but Comcast seems to have a way of chewing up e-mails without the courtesy of sending an alert--despite the fact that you (and others) have been manually added to my "safe" list. 11. Hi, JD.I just wanted to touch base with you to see if you'd seen my earlier e-mails about the (failed) registration for Radar Contact.I'm at a loss on this one as we apparently ran into problems with this back in 2006, but they were eventually resolved (seemingly by using the same e-mail address). Please reply at your earliest convenience. Thanks much,Michael Pettis
  12. Just wondering if the Level-D 767 is supported under Windows XP x64?Also, I remember a while back that there were some who were using the earlier version of the (PIC-767?) 767 cockpit/panel with one of the 757's; don't remember if this was Captain Sim or PSS. Based on that, 1) does anyone recall which 757 it was working with and, 2) has anyone tried the same using the Level-D 767.All of this is assuming everything is using licensed copies, of course (I saw the thread about the knucklehead wanting support for an a/c he'd downloaded from a Pirate site; what a goofball.)Thanks,Michael Pettis
  13. Hi, All.Has anyone seen this before? I'm using the Aeroworx B200 or the Captain Sim C130 in FS2004 with a CH Control Yoke and Throttle. I currently have Throttles 1 and 2 set for Throttle, 3 and 4 set for Propeller and 5 and 6 set for Condition Levers. The controls are setup with CH Control Manager and I've set up the mappings in FSUIPC, and I've got the condition levers set so full rear is fuel cutoff, just above the detent is Low Idle and full forward is High Idle. All is well in 2D and VC, until I bring the condition lever up to Low Idle. At that point I see the windshield wipers quickly twitch for a quick moment and then any attempts to pan in VC result in a stuttering that acts like it's trying to go left or right, but immediately returns to center. Put the condition levers back in shutoff and I can pan again with no problem. Up and down panning does not seem to be affected. I'm posting the contents of my FS9.cfg and Twin Turboprop-modified.map files for reference.Any thoughts? Anyone? Anyone?
