  1. My Q9650 is good. Very good. But I'm having graphics problems, and I suspect my GTX 260 video card may need replacing. The best bang for buck is the GTX 560 Ti. Before I buy - I'd welcome opinion on that pairing. Will they be happy together?
  2. I can't make AP function at all. The button is permanently greyed out. Alt and Heading buttons light when pressed, but don't do their job. Help!
  3. Thanks for that. Sounds reasonable to me. But I have a tendency to screw up unless I know the abc of what to do. In this case I'm not sure, so if you could spell it out for me, that would be a big help.CheersPeter
  4. Several days after installing REX, blue screen and crash. "Kernel error...boot disc failure." After that, all hard runways and tarmac areas in FSX and FTX turned black. No all-grass airfields were affected. I've just installed Orbis PNW, and haveb the same problem. I've tried rebuilding the FSX cfg, running Repair in Acceleration, updating video drivers, handing the PC to a computer engineer, who found and killed a virus which presumably is/was a suspect. But still no cure for the black runways. Something must have corrupted textures somewhere. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
  5. Thanks, Jon. But how do I find which texture?
  6. Several days after installing REX, blue screen and crash. 'Kernel error...boot disc failure.' After that, all hard runways and tarmac/concrete areas in FSX and Orbis FTX turned black, sometimes with multi-colour stripes as well. No grass/turf/gravel runways were affected. Now the new Orbis PNW shows the same errors. Given that REX replaces default textures, I suspeted a link, but that was discounted. I have tried rebuilding FSX cfg, running Acceleration repair, changing video driver, handing PC to a computer engineer who is also a flightsim addict. He did find and kill a virus which presumably caused the initial crash, and possibly could have affected runway textures. But still no cure for the black runways. I have ransacked Google, but could find only a single similar case, and the trick which solved that - switching off/on the filtering on the FSX in-game graphics tab - doesn't work for me.Any suggestions or clues would be much appreciatedPeter
  7. That's good to hear. Thanks again. Geforce just arived - here we go!
  8. Miquel, I forgot to ask: [1] which drivers did you use? [2] did you have the notorious 8800 AA problems? Thanks -
  9. Miquel, that's very interesting [especially since I've also ordered an E6850 as well]. Your comments are mirrored in the Guru 3d review: "...bang for bucks...one of the fastest cards to date...close to 8800 GTX performance, for a lot less money...for the end user the 8800 GTS 512mb is a small step forward in the series 8 products...you get to play around with GTX performance at a lower price...skip the 8800 GTX or Ultra, just go for either a Geforce 8800 GT 512 mb or 8800 GTS 512 mb, as these two products are where the real value is to be found."
  10. Thanks, people, for your interest - and the useful reference to Phil's blog. For what it's worth,I ordered the card from BFG on the strength of a very positive Guru 3d review. It's their OC version: Core Clock 675 MHz vs 650 MHz standard. Not much, but every little helps, and I haven't the competence or confidence to experiment with overclocking myself.
  11. It's great that you guys have had no problems, but I must admit to being surprised. The forums have been flooded with complaints that recent Nvidia drivers screw up AA in 8800 cards, and reports that the only remedy is a third-party program, Nhancer. I wonder what drivers you use?
  12. Many thanks, Abe. I posted on three forums, but yours has been the only reply! I hope that's simply because the 2900 Pro is so new, plus being a limited edition. I'm seeking info because my current Geforce 6800GT, though fine, really needs upgrading, and my local computer shop keeps trying to flog me the Sapphire 2900 PRO, but I'm a total stranger to Radeon. The Guru 3D review is favourable but with caveats: "...consumes an extensive amount of power when gaming and it isn't the most silent card on the block ...incredible amount of bang for your bucks - if you can live with the knowledge of that power consumption and the fact that it's a noisy product." It's the power and noise questions that bug me. Incidentally, given that the same card can vary so much depending on manufacturer, do you know if Sapphire has a good reputation?
  13. I ask because I'm on the point of getting an 8800GTS 512mb, and could do without the heap of hassles GT owners are having ...
  14. Pros and cons would be appreciated, particularly the Sapphire model.[Noise level is one important factor for me!]
  15. A big thank you to all you guys for the generous response to my question which sparked this thread - particularly Nick and Bill, without whom I would never have known that FX_2.bmp could be the problem. It was indeed missing from Effectstexture, so I pasted in again, and bingo! Problem solved! Hopefully that may help someone else ...
  16. Thanks, Bill, for your specific reply. I've checked FSX Effectstexture. There is no fs_2.bmp file. In fact, no fs.bmp files. They're all fx. Of those, there's no fx_2 : just fx-1 and fx_3.I think I may have found the source of the problem. A piece of scenery whose Effects folder is "for lights that appear in the scenery" and contains seven files. I have to admit to being pretty clueless about these things: what's the best thing to do? Perhaps restore the default files? But how? Bkeske suggested making a change in the CFG. What would I do? I'm not worried about losing fancy lighting effects: I just want to get rid of the wretched square lights wrecking my FSX, and your advice would be much appreciated.
  17. >like this attachment? I had to reinstalled fsx to fix it :)>Like your attachment 1, yes. See mine! But I don't want to reinstall if I can avoid it. How about Repair: did you try that?
  18. Out of the blue - I've made no changes of any kind - the nav lights on all my aircraft, including AI, have turned into large squares, as have runway marker lights. Help!amd 4000+geforce 6800GT2 gig RAMFSX SP1
  19. Since I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of my 8800 GT, it's great to see so many happy owners - especially after a trawl through the Nvidia forum unearthed a heap of unhappies. One persistent complaint concerns AA activation ["AA does not work at all without the latest 8800 drivers"] and the apparent need to use Nhancer, which doesn't appeal to me. So I wonder - did any of you guys run into this problem? And I imagine Nvidia is still trying to sort out the right driver for such a new kid on the block: or has it succeeded already?PS I'd love to see those screenshots, but they've been blocked. Anywhere else I can get at them?
