Can FSX utilize 8 cores? The new AMD chips.
jnrjim67 replied to OmniAtlas's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etc+1 on the above comments, wow some very aggressive user posts going on here over just a game an what CPU more like pride filled testosterone arguments, I can tell you first hand though thru pure experince as I owned a FX-8120 running at 4.6Ghz with the same Video card as my current system i7 2600K @4.6Ghz and there is no comparison whatsoever the intel CPU is far superior for FSX with my addons FTX, FTX airports and REX with 3rd party Aircraft. I really wanted the AMD FX and was waiting for a while with all the delays etc I was excited till I ran FSX and at that stage I also had the first gen i7 860 @4Ghz and let me tell you it still was quicker than the FX @4.6Ghz as for the 2600K thats another story best upgrade for FSX I ever made no doubt and as to why most hardened FSX users fly with either 2500K/2600K seems unanimous to me dont you think.

Bad news for CPU prices
Just because most FSX users use Nvidia cards doesn't mean the last AMD GPU's have failed, they may not perform well under FSX but do well on most other game platforms, and from what I have read AMD is doing better than Nvidia a link here and many others reports on the web too http://www.ibtimes.c...vices-tesla.htm http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20012025-64.html AMD's GPU market is healthy let's hope it remains like that so we can still buy competitively priced Nvidia GPU's for FSX.

jnrjim67 replied to joetuesday's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcOk I was the one who had the FX-8120 @4.6Ghz discussed a few posts up well I wont be running the FSX Benchmark that Stephen asked me too as the gear is gone I found an avid AMD buyer and he had an i7 2600K and we did a trade together, so sorry for no results but in doing that I have the 2600K now and wow what a massive difference really night and day with FSX other games not much difference to FX-8120 but with FSX because its so CPU dependant the AMD falls way off its not just a few frames its easily double with the i7 with exactly the same in game settings, all I can say is for FSX if anyone is considering updating and thinking AMD forget it go i5/i7 it is by far the best solution for FSX even the first gen i7 is much better as I still have it comparing at the time earlier with the AMD but now the SB is even better again in a completely different league.

jnrjim67 replied to joetuesday's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcYes very late here in AUS but ill do the test when I get a free chance over the coming days just for evidence sake, and correct AMD users will be disappointed especially under FSX where its very CPU dependant this is where you can see Intels strength in its superior CPU with a much higher IPC, didnt notice a big difference in any other games I tried, but FSX uses brute CPU power and it showed the difference was big.

jnrjim67 replied to joetuesday's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcHi Stephen when I get a chance ill do that just for comparisons sake, but my goodness with my FSX running REX and FTX AUS with a handful of FTX Airports and running it on the AMD FX it just struggles when it gets heavy on scenery like I said it even drops in and out of single digit frames and I tried all sorts of different settings the i7 had no issues whatsoever and never dipped into single digits its frames were much more consistant and generally were double the frames over the FX when flying in the heavy scenery and airports and judging from your sig with your 2600k and the gtx 580 your FSX experience would be very satisfying.

jnrjim67 replied to joetuesday's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcHi Guys just new here got me a new AMD FX-8120 for some FSX testing and I have it stable @4.6Ghz well let me tell you it struggles compared to my other rig an i7 860 @4ghz with FSX I have kept all settings and sliders the same and both run a GTX 470 and in all honesty the i7 is much quicker and smoother I see single digits with the BD never with the i7, if you are serious into FSX forget the BD the i7 is much quicker I could imagine with the Sandy Bridge the difference would much greater again looks like Ill be aiming to get the SB very soon I had high hopes for the BD with FSX but its not the case not even close.
