  1. Hello All, I am trying to get FSX to run in 3D mode via Nvidia 3D tv play. Most games run ok in 3D but cannot get FSX to behave. Figured out how it needs to work it will only work on 720P 60 hz however there is no option to go 6ohz in FSX it runs at 120hz only it seems, it only allows to set the resolution so need to find out how to force it to use desktop resolution and refresh rate. Looked through Nvidia control panel tried all Vsync options but as soon as I start the flight it will switch to 120Hz disabling 3D. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
  2. yep that speaks for itself and as I said if it was the way to go I would buy the right card whatever it was called. But there is no need for FSX, I wish there was. You can stop around the middle of that list FSX just wont improve from there up. Spent thousands experimenting with gpus and cpus.
  3. Yeah unfortunately I think you are right. I am considering the move to P3D v2.2 but nor sure if/what percentage of add ons I can transfer over. My FSX is worth approx $3000-4000:)
  4. What I love about the R9 is that it is dead silent even at full tilt I can hardly hear it as opposed to my GTX 670 which annoyed the hell out of my when playing anything due to noise.
  5. fan boys that's what I thought:) As mentioned I have been in the computing business very heavily since the commodore 16 and even before just can't remember what it was called I think the ZX Spektrum and played flight sim on those great machines. So point is in about 30 years of computing this is my first ATI card which I am very happy with (always owned the top of the line Nvidia cards), heaps cheaper too and performs just as good in FSX as any other nividia that is a fact full stop. Sorry boys and girls. I would buy other cards is that was necessary as did in the past. Ryan my fps goes beyond 20 sometimes the average low is 14. BRIAN well said! My point was that most users here completely ignore the fact that my issue was solved and it had NOTHING to do with the GPU they still keep going on about how Nvidia is better. I just don't believe sometimes how ignorant people are. Well let them pay twice the amount for the same performance. You will never convince them otherwise. This comes from 10 years of hardware sales.
  6. Funny everyone still keeps favouring posts here suggesting that the cause was the graphics card despite that fact the this issue was related to an entirely different problem as it was proven. Jus don't get it peeps:)
  7. Have to agree clock speed does not mean much these days its all about multi core cpus we are just out of luck with FSX lets hope MS will surprise us with a new version. Right at the end just wanted add a simple logical observation. Generated a very heavy thunderstorm in REX and loaded the 777 at LHBP payware where I was usually getting low fps. Fps was low of course round 14 however once switched to outside view it was up to 35-40 so if it was a bottleneck with the R9 GPU surely would have struggled with the heavy clouds and weather. It just proves there is nothing wrong with it and fsx simply cannot utilize GPU power over a certain range thus it is as always the CPU is the bottleneck. I am sure I will get heaps of very technical explanations why Nvidia is better but it just makes no difference at this level of the GPU game for fsx as simple as that.
  8. Again it performs better then my GTX 670 now that cfg is fixed. Not sure why every die hard Nvidia fan keeps saying these things. This is my first ATI card and I am impressed. Exactly and appreciate the help from everyone here! I would be curious though as to why flying pmdg has changed performance. Also if there is any other CPU I could upgrade to however I doubt it. The 4770K or the 4930K seem to be the lone options and they are not worth the trouble. Possibly the next generation. Maybe... Reason I ask is that in mid atlantic flight just had a BSOD so had to increase core voltage to 1.45 which is not healthy.
  9. yes that's what I meant and you are right but there is hardly any load on the card, as I just mentioned now I am back to normal performance regardless of the GPU. The only trivial questions is why flying the PMDG have altered performance in the cfg? I guess we may never find out.
  10. Well again you might be right about ATI however I am still not convinced that it is the main cause as the R9 280X is very powerful and odes not even spin up when under full load in FSX. I have deleted .cfg and let FSX recreate it. Pushed settings one by one and now I am nearly at the level where I was with very low fps but now I get the average 14-17fps instead of the 9-11fps which is now enjoyable. This is what I was getting before flying the PMDG aircraft. I still don't get why the .cfg got screwed just by flying the PMDG???One thing I notice is that Fly Tampa airports seem to be much better optimized as frame rates are nearly 50% better than Aerosoft or others and they also look better.HOWEVER I do agree that generating a REX thunderstorm slows things down a notch which may be due to the rendering capabilities of the GPU.Any thought on that? Also forgot to add that I am a professional system builder and have built many systems since day one for FSX and the results were in the CPU and hardly ever in the GPU but that is just my experience. one more things I used to run FSX on a GTX 670 and on the R9 things looks smoother. This is my first ATI card ever too.
  11. Thanks will test these shortly however I definitely want to run DX 10 even if it means getting an Nvidia card but honestly I doubt it would be any benefit over the R9.
  12. Thanks will do shortly. What exactly do you mean by AA and AF normal? Should is et all else at high or leave settings at default?
  13. Also I noticed the sudden FPS loss after the first flight on the PMDG 737 which of course may be a coincidence but now ALL aircraft are slower than they were. Bufferpools IS in the Graphics section and once only. Do you mean it perhaps should not be in brackets?? OK here is the test and is completely without add ons and all sliders requested as 0 and FPS at unlimited. Default Cessna: average 140 fps Majestic Q400: average 60-70 fps (nearly the same outside) PMDG 777: average 30-35 fps They were all recorder in the VC the biggest difference is in the 777 the fps doubles in outside view it still takes about 3-4 seconds to draw the view once switched back to VC. Hi Enrico, You do have some points there. However firstly the R9 uses GDDR5 3GB which is insanely fast NOT DDR3. As I mentioned on the OP I did use Word Not Allowed's guide and AFTER I was able to use FSX with the Majestic Q400 quite smoothly and all other aircaft. The NGX was installed already before I overclocked I was just not using it I only installed the 777 yesterday and it seems fps have dropped after the first flight with NGX so that is why I am posting here. As in short after OC and .cfg tweaks I was able to enjoy FSX but it went pear shaped after flying the NGX which I think has happened 2 years ago as well hence my frustration and the long brake from FSX. Hope this makes sense. Also I hear what everyone is saying about ATI cards and it may apply to some degree but but not as dramatic as some here says for sure when you use a high end card as such.
  14. 3GB DDR5 so that should be plenty. This card is top of the line anything runs faster on it than on my previous GTX 670 without even making any noise. The GTX was really noisy and struggling compared to the R9. ohh yes forgot to add I am using FSX on a 120" inch Full HD projector. I believe that's the way to enjoy it:) That however should not make any difference to the video card. the second video card entry just refers to a card that I swapped out it's not there I will delete it.
  15. No not the default aircraft. the R9 280x Turbo is weak?? What should I be using? It does not seem to work too hard under fsx load. See that's why I don't get it. Much lower systems run much faster. Hmm yeah might be worth generating a new .cfg. Yes using the fixer and the settings in .cfg are from Word Not Allowed's guide so they theoretically should be spot on?? if I could just get up to 14FPS I would be happy I don't think it should be hard with my system.
  16. G'day fellow simmers, Long story short after nearly two years decided to return to the world of flight sim. Started with overclocking the hell out of my 3930K on water however it will only do 4.4Ghz safely. Used Word Not Allowed's guide to tweak FSX.cfg and other settings. Everything went smooth and I was very happy with performance purchased REX Direct texture and Essentials plus and Majestic Q400 with all these even in heavy thunderstorm nearly maxed out settings I am getting 20-25 fps so naturally I was over the moon I was finally enjoying my flight sim again. HOWEVER i just remembered that I have purchased PMDG 737NGX so fired it up and my enthusiasm dropped by a large margin suddenly I was getting between 7-12 fps max not enjoyable at all. OK I thought the new 777 must be well optimized so I went ahead and purchased the beast. The aircraft is the best I've ever experienced but fps is just the same as the 737 if not worse. This low performance generally only occurs with the 737 in the VC, external is snappy and reasonably quick however the 777 is sluggish even on the outside switching to outside view it takes about 10 seconds to draw the aircraft switching back to VC I get black windshields and it takes approx 5-10 seconds to draw the view. Need to also add I use ORBX scenery and very detailed airports. System: i7 3930K @ 4.4Ghz on water temperatures are well below 80c GPU Powercolor R9 280x Turbo factory overclocked. (had to roll back driver to older version due to the Steve's DX 10 fix spiking issue 12.8 I think) 16GB DDR3 1600mhz RAM True 850 watt PSU Gigabyte X58-UD3 mobo SSD dedicated for FSX my .cfg is below any suggestion is greatly appreciated as I am dying to fly this aircraft. 17. Thanks will do. Any tips for a good ground handling app? Try NZQN ORBX stunning and quite challenging.
  18. Thanks Bruce, Before reading your comment I just put in a flight. What I did was simply programmed the FMC for a direct route and some fuel and performance data. I let ATC to handle the flight until I reached cruising altitude at that point I switched on the auto pilot and LNAV, ignored the ATC handover let the FMC guide the plane to about 70NM from the destination where I slowed down time to normal got in contact with ATC again and I got nicely vectored in for an ILS approach that I handled myself completely and hand landed the plane. Happy ending:) So yes pretty similar to what you have just posted I will try that approach as well I think this is a more satisfying way to learn the complex FMC programming while we still can enjoy flying. Learning the whole process all at once does put off a lot of people. I just don't get why there are no such quick and dirty tutorials as not everyone have time/wants to fly by the book. Cheers Andrew Hear hear and I agree however learning how the aircraft behaves under certain conditions also comes with experince not only from the computer;) I fly and build large RC models/jets where CG calculation is most important etc... so I have basic understanding of these things.
  19. Hey Bruce, Yep that is what I want exactly fly take offs and approaches in full manual in all sorts of weather conditions and let the FMC handle the boring part. What could be more fun than in huge cross winds arriving at NZ Queenstown's short runway between mountains over the lake with ORBX NZ installed?? Faaantastic:) Just got my new 3930K 4.5GHz no frame rate drops in these situations epic fun. BTW I got interested in this great little airport when were about to take off in real life but the wind and pressure suddenly changed and from that moment on we were too heavy to take off so a few people had to get off:) Thanks heaps for the good input. Andrew
  20. Just received a reply from an old friend of mine who was a captain on a 767 flying long haul routes. He said he flew the aircraft most of the time below 10K feet manually but the were some approaches where they were advised not to due to traffic density such as JFK so he let the computer do the work there. This is from a real pilot not from a keyboard fighter:)
  21. NYxxUK Obviously you have never driven a Ferrari. Changing gear is the easiest thing to do in that car, keeping from flying it off the road is the real challenge and most fun. THAT IS exactly what I want to do with the PMDG!!! It has the best flight model on the planet and it's a waste not to fly it maually. Would you sit in a Ferrari while a computer drives it for you?? Don't think so:) I can't believe how ignorant some people can be. Sorry no offence. mikea76 You are absolutely right and thanks for the proper answer. So should I use VATSIM if I wanted ATC? The challenge for me is that I love to hand fly the plane (and don't mind the basic FMC programming) but while crusing I don't have the time to follow instructions so I just fast forward that is when I want the FMC to follow the path until I start the descent. This is what I would love to achieve. AGAIN I do admire the PMDG in every aspect but why not make it fun? get the point everyone? Cheers
  22. I don't mean to be rude either but I was expecting these sort of answers and not one to the question I actually asked:) As I said I do know how the FMC works however I just want to get up in the air and fly. I understand that this is how real world aircraft fly but this is a sim and I don't see the point of only typing info into a computer and just sit there do nothing and simply watch the plane fly itself. What is the joy in that?? I might as well just watch a you tube video... There is much more to flying in real life than that. In fact I do have pilot friends (yes I will ask them too) who used to say whenever they can they fly the plane manually otherwise it's too boring. If you don't what's to point of having the beautifully modelled flight characterisitcs of the PMDG?? Autoland is also great but again watch a video instead. Also fellow simmers you need to understand some people like me don't want/have time for the complexity of the real systems but do want the quality of such aircraft as simple as that. Anyway tf51d thanks very much that is sort of the answer I was after. So basically I can just import the flight plan and when cruising just enable LNAV/VNAV? I thought that would not be as simple. Thanks
  23. G'day, I've been using FSX since the the begining and have been flying all sort of aircraft and now I have purchased the PMDG 737NGX. It is a wonderful aircaft in every aspect. I love flying it however I do not have the time to go through the complex FMC setup before every flight and I also like to hand fly the plane which give me satisfaction I undrestand and admire the FMC and the procedures but I do not just want to press computer buttons and watch the plane fly itself I want to be part of the action. So what I would like to do is: Handle take off myself completely following ATC instructions then once reached cruising altitude hand over control to FMC and again take back control once started descent. Is this possible and if so how? It would be an absolute joy if someone could provide an answer to this. Cheers
