Can you explain Dash a little more. I found it inside Oculus settings and you have to enable it as a beta software. I have not tried yet, I found some documentation on Oculus, but it seems as it is targeting developers not end users. So, I would truly appreciate how you go about getting the ATC window, GPS window and kneeboard to show in VR mode for P3D v4. I am planning on upgrading and not using Flyinside.

I am getting tired of the pop windows popping up in different places all the time, and unable to interact with them in critical phases of flight. and when you are flying IFR on approach it becomes very frustrating.

     Does the sim pause, etc...

    Thanks so much,

    realkewl

I think you an take a look a tutorial videos such as this one to better understand the concept. Lately I have found out that you need to use button (I believe it is the "A", I am not at home now). The latest version of P3D allows 2D windows from the simulator to appear in VR. I believe it is also possible to undock the 2D window an pin-it via Oculus Dash.

Compare this now to a full scale simulator and that's how much the immersion factor has increased. I know I will never fly a real 737 but I no longer envy the pilots that do! 😁

Ha! That is exactly my feeling! 🙂

Now it is possible to sit on flight-decks not only of a high-fidelity 737s, but 777s, 747s, A32Xs and F-18s/A10Cs/F5s/AV8s if you are into military birds. VR is really the greatest addition to this hobby since since I started simming.

    @GCBraun,

Thanks for being one of the first that uses Oculus Dash and VR windows. Do you think you lose any frames per second running with Dash instead of Classic Oculus Home? Can you scroll inside a VR window? Can you have a map and be able to pan it and zoom it?

There may very well be a performance impact if you have multiple windows, but, with just one, it is not something that I really notice. There are no performance loss just by using Oculus Dash.

As for scrolling or panning, you need to open the Oculus Dash to do that. This is a very good feature request and hopefully it will be available in the future.

Correct me if I’m wrong but you can’t open and close or minimize the window when you’re in P3D, correct? Do you have to exit back to Oculus Home to manipulate the window?

I’m interested in bringing a Little Navmap window but I believe it’s stays where you put it and can only be toggled on and off or interacted with from outside of P3D, am I mistaken?

Please elaborate on how exactly you select and interact with external windows brought into P3D.

    Thanks in advance

    Joe

Yes, you need to go back to the oculus interface to resize or reposition the window. This does not take more than 2 seconds, though. And if we are talking about charts or maps here, I am not sure why you would need to keep chenging the position of the window. I always try to position the 2D window somewhere around where I would expect an EFB to be positioned.

You need controllers or can you manipulate windows in native with a mouse?

You use the native VR controllers. In XP11 it works even better, because you can actually control the aircraft and interact with itst switches/knobs using the controllers, so you don't really need your mouse for anything. Hopefully P3D will adopt this strategy as well.

Regardless, I still find the native solution from Oculus Dash a much better and performant way to bring 2D windows into the cockpit.

I won’t stop using flyinside because it’s the only way to bring approach charts into the v r environment. Plus I like the interface.

No, it is not. If you have the Rift you can do it much more efficiently using the native Oculus software.

Although the AS bus has a checklist with copilot function to assist beginners I always fail to understand how the whole product is just something for beginners.

If I do a normal SOP flight from A to B I can push even more buttons, that are required IRL, with the the AS bus then any other P3D bus has at the moment. Sure we do not model 50.000 electrons that zip from system to system but the level of operation is nothing less than any other product. Or do you consider typing in the ZFW and ZFWCG in the AS bus different from doing it with another product for example?

     Cheers

The general product has a lower-end feeling to it, especially with the sounds. I think beginners are less prone to note those things. It is just hard to go to the AS Bus and cold-start it coming from the FSL. Just too many nice little details missing IMHO. It is much cheaper though, so it surely has its audience.

  8. So, just completed a semi-long-haul flight of 6 hours. Impressions:

    Positives:

    • No CTD`s this time.

    Negatives:

    • Sub-par LNAV performance:
    • The Airplane can`t get out of HOLDs. Had to use HDG/VS basically for 1 hour because even though I have armed the hold exit multiple times, the aircraft would refuse to continue with the route.

Back to the Hangar, I guess.

No I'm not saying its an excuse. And I dont recall QW saying that.  Of course it should be fixed. But its been hammered into me from a relative with over 30 yrs flying heavies, if the aircraft is not behaving the way it should, then take over with another action. You dont give up and crash the plane just because VNAV doesnt want to initiate descent. As far as I cant tell, they are working it out.  The CRJ had the same issue with LNAV tracking  and it took about 5 updates before they got it closer to what it should be. Not an easy fix.

Of course you would try to solve the issue with alternative measures. The thing is that LNAV/VNAV problems IRL are not that common and, if it happens during a flight, it would surely demand maintenance work to get it fixed asap. The QW787, on the other hand, usually has significant difficulties following SID/STAR profiles that are just a bit more curvy than a straight line. It is not something that happens once in a while unfortunately...

I honestly dont understand why LNAV and VNAV are show stoppers for people. Ever heard of HDG mode?  V/S mode?

I think this explains it all really. Yeah, why bother complaining that LNAV/VNAV should work properly? Just use HDG or V/S mode guys! Problem solved. 🙂

I decided the best option for me was to stick with FSX, actually FSX:SE.

Specifically addressing your point, though, more freeware is available in all categories for FSX than any other flight sim available today (except FS2004 which wasn't under consideration by me). If you have verifiable numbers supporting a counter argument that XP-11 has more freeware available, please point me to the reference source. I'm willing to be disabused of my position, though I don't think it's likely.

Even though it is dead, FSX is 12 years old at this point. Of course it may have MORE freeware content. I am talking about QUALITY here, not QUANTITY. XP11 is a current-gen platform that comes out of the box with great GA aircraft and the very, very capable G1000 navigation suite with VNAV, Airport Maps, Terrain and SID/STARS. You can add a very good 737NG and photo-scenery texture for basically the whole world for free. And I did not even mention the thousands of airports and great plugins available for the platform. Please remember that the Hub for all things XP is not AVSIM, but X-plane.org.

Just check the download section for some minutes and you`ll see what I mean...

Look, you were the one saying that you have been out of the loop for a while. If you still think FSX is the best option in 2018, have fun.

I think with an ill-though out comment like that, this thread is heading for closure. Which would be a shame for those who are following it...

Why? Can`t we criticize products here anymore? It is a fact that the aircraft has LNAV problems. Even the developer`s have recognized that.

I have never had a CTD or any LNAV issues with the 787. The aircraft works perfectly fine for me. I'd say you're safe to give her a go.

Never had LNAV issues? I find that hard to believe...I experience issues on almost every curve. I think that you are just not paying attention.

    The aircraft has potential, though.

I think someone said above. You can just undock the window before enabling VR --> box disappears. I haven't noticed any negative consequences of this.

I understand, but I am still curious what this sensor is, considering that it seems that there is no functionality loss when it is disabled. 🙂

Appreciate the reply. I fixed it by sadly doing another full install of P3D and now slowly installing 3rd party stuff again.  I'm wondering if it is ChasePlane or PTA that's causing the problem, I'm about to install them again. Fingers crossed.

Do you have any of these software(s) install and working ok?

Thanks for the white box tip though.

    IM

Yes I do, but I don`t have 2D pop-ups because of the workaround to fix the white windows. Other than that, things are running pretty smoothly.

Modelling looks good to me. Compared it to real and they have it spot on. Not sure what inconsistencies your seeing ? Care to elaborate ?

I`ve meant more the texture work both outside and in the cockpit. It is still not at the same level even when comparing with the older Aerosoft from what I`ve remember.

  17. I think I have found my new favorite jetliner. These new immersion additions are really, really nice. Only complain that I have is the external modelling and textures, which look a bit underwhelming when comparing to other similar birds.
