  1. I have a question. I currently have a 4770K and a GTX 780. Now I got burned in the silicone lottery , but I noticed with P3D, that even at somewhat lower frame rates, I am getting a smooth response from the simulation.

I suppose everyone wants the latest and greatest. Oh yeah...the question  If I were to wait and buy a GTX 980 when the 8GB flavour comes out, would I be able to put off upgrading CPU? Would the better graphics card give me a better experience with P3D or would my relatively slow CPU bottleneck the system?

The next CPU upgrade will involve motherboard, memory and CPU, given that the next generation will be using DDR4. I'm not sure I'll get a major bang for my buck going to a 4790K, given that would mean staying with my current graphics card. The current graphics card is not a loser. I'm just looking to get improvement at best value.

It would either be a 4790K or the upgraded graphics card. I would prefer to wait at least a year before putting out 1000-1500 dollars for the next gen CPU and other stuff.

Any comments would be appreciated. I'm not looking for absolutes, but guidance is most welcome. I hope this is not considered off topic.

Given your current setup of 4770K and GTX 780, I would keep that for the time being.

If you spent the $ to upgrade to 4790K and GTX 980 I don't think you would get much extra performance for the spend. You could probably measure the increase in single digit FPS increase in most situations - IMO it wouldn't be worth it.

I would hang off until Intel's Skylake CPU's come out and Nvidia's "full fat" Maxwell GPUS.

If you want to improve your simming experience instead of just improving FPS then perhaps invest in a larger/better display or some peripherals such yokes/throttles/Goflight panels etc (if you don't already have them) - I recently had the same dilemma as you, I'm running a 4670K and GTX 780 and had to fight the urge to go to an X99 6-core platform with GTX 980, after a bit of investigation I found that the performance gains in P3D v2 would not be very significant from my current setup.

The cash was still burning a hole in my pocket so I splurged on a pre-order Iris Dynamics force feedback yoke and set of Philips Fidelio X2 headphones.

  2. As far as the rumor mill goes, its is widely believed that LM are working with Nvidia to improve P3D v2 driver support. Hopefully this would result in far better AA implementation in the P3D engine itself thus negating the need to force AA using external apps. SLI support has also been hinted towards.....

The DSR "tweak" has also been shown to provide excellent visual improvements - there is an extensive thread on it in the P3D forum section.

  3. I'll second Michael's suggestion; in an ideal situation you want your main 'sim rig' to be 100% dedicated to running the sim and nothing else.

My main screen is a Benq BL3200pt (32" 1440p) and I did run a second screen for a while, a Dell U2412m in portrait for displaying Aivlasofts EFB. Whilst I found no significant performance hit I had to run P3D in "real" windowed mode to allow the second monitor to be usable during flight - with the sim in fullscreen mode the second screen goes black. (running from a GTX 780 btw)

I went out and bought a cheap desktop tower, a very ordinary spec machine (second hand for £180) and I now have that running ASN / OPUSFSI / Aivlasoft EFB / Navigraph desktop charts via network with my sim rig and displaying on the dell U2412m.

  4. Hello pipeorgan

Can you say from where you purchased your PC world terrain dvd, as I cannot find any online store which stocks it in the UK?

    Thank you

I got the GTN disc from this place http://www.gps.co.uk

I emailed asking them if they stocked the disc ( Garmin Part No - 010-00478-00 )

The bloke who runs the business (Lawrence) ordered it directly from Garmin USA, once it arrived at his location he emailed me back asking to call the shop to make credit card payment over the phone (£33 all in) - disc arrived via royal mail 2 days later.

  5. I'm waiting (and hoping) that Elite will eventually provide P3Dv2 support for their MEL throttle - at which point I will sell the Goflight TQ6 and grab the MEL.

As my TQ6 is almost brand new I cant say I've experienced and "stickiness" on the levers, I'm assuming this is a symptom that develops over time with lots of usage, the WD40 tip sounds like its worth a try!
