June 28, 200322 yr I think it means that if you push the AP button, the airplane will fly by itself. But I'm not sure... ;-)
June 28, 200322 yr sounds like a numerical techinque involving a random number generator and irregular geometric behavior. perhaps the system, autopilot flight, is treated as a random system in order to simulate real world characteristics. the technique is used to calculate the second order derivative in the respective three dimensions. in other words, acceleration. in F16.c, a simple f16 takeoff and landing siumulator i wrote, i used the Rungge Kutta 4 method to determine derivatives. we use random walkers all the time in computational physics to simulate real world behavior. i'm not sure what methods other developers have used but this one sounds good to me.Andre
June 28, 200322 yr Commercial Member Matthew-That was just a subtle way of explaining that you won't find this level of functionality and realism in many other places.Vangelis has put his professional training to good use in this area..... June 28, 200322 yr Commercial Member I was impressed myself :-) What the heck do these guys talk about ? :(In truth I borrowed a number of numerical techniques for noise suppression and problem solving used in computational fluid dynamics and modelling of turbulence, which is what I do for a living. The idea is to design a system that is (a) quick in response (safety), BUT (:( smooth in action (passenger comfort), and promotes © low error tolerance in final solution (again safety, recent JAR-opps, RVSM etc), BUT is (d) able to absorb small scale noise for those that use real weather or ahem... PIO (pilot-induced-oscillations). As you can see independent requirements tend to contradict each other. The situation for some cases (i.e. level change, VNAV speed and others) becomes rather delicate and if one tries to optimise parameters by trial and error without using some science he will finish when FS3000 is released ! Apart from math and such, I should say that Lefteris Kalamaras provided THE most helpful online tuning graph utility (within FS yes !). Science is good, eyes are better.I am sure most of you will enjoy autolands but I should inform you that what completely and utterly racked my nerves was (a) level change and (:( transition to and maintaining alt hold. :-batRegards,VangelisPS. Rob sorry for misinformation on my behalf : we owe more to Karl Gauss rather than Marquise de Laplace.======================================= E. M. June 28, 200322 yr Commercial Member Hello Andre,No need to use a RNG :-) FS+FSUIPC do a wonderful job in providing all the noise that you want. An RK4 method would bring computers to their knees (have you ever tried Kash-Carp RK ?). I use two-step Crank-Nicholson for time derivatives and a lot of under-relaxation, weighted residual and box filter techniques for noise suppression. Solutions are obtained as eigenvalues in augmented time/alt or hdg/pitch/bank/speed/VS/thrust space hence hyper-geometric. I also made sure that respective transfer functions have complex roots for stability purposes. I placed a lot of attention in usability since the average simmer has never received proper training in FD assisted manual flight (and why should he/she ?). The system therefore learns and adapts if plane is flown in errr... unorthodox fashion.OK end of discussion this is not J. Comp. Phys. :-)Cheers,Vangelis===================================== E. M. June 28, 200322 yr Eh can you explain this is human language? *:-* http://forums.avsim.com/user_files/18885.gif Basten Heidema, iFDG, Fsmagazine reviewer

Way :-cool-michael
June 29, 200322 yr Hey Robert, I think Van just gets a real kick from confusing the pilots with his lingo? :-lolGeorgePS: You guys are going to love the flight dynamics and a/p that Van built! George Morris
June 29, 200322 yr Hey, Don't have a heart-attack...just yet...I had a heart-attack when I read this on your site.... June 30, 200322 yr Guys, i just finished school and you just HAD to rub it all in again don't you??? i'm SICK of math now ;)btw: "Solutions are obtained as eigenvalues in augmented time/alt or hdg/pitch/bank/speed/VS/thrust space hence hyper-geometric"Do you happen to speak dutch and did you 'wrongfully' translate eigenwaarden(who i only remember in the diagnosis of "Cone-cuts"(don't know the word... sorry)) to Eigenvalues or is Eigenvalues nor a neologism?Cheers
June 30, 200322 yr Lenny,Eigenvalues is the correct word - these are vectors that are solutions of some multi-dimensional linear equations (usually written in the matrix form). Any book on linear algebra makes references to eigenvalues.Obviously I have no way of knowing whether Vangelis is just having fun or he really employed eigenvalues in his software. June 30, 200322 yr Nice! what about the flight model? i am not too familiar with how fs2002 models flight, but it is my understanding that it is not really physics based. does the 737ng use any such powerful techinuqes to model flight or are we limited by the current fs design? Andre
