July 10, 200322 yr Moderator Hi Alex,17"! aarrgghh! Unless space is tight consider upgrading to a 19" CRT. Prices have never been lower and there is a big difference in how you perceive FS. You could consider staying with 512Mb RAM as the extra is a luxury rather than a necessity. You could put that money towards a new display and enjoy multiple monitors - a real boom for FS. The 9500 Pro supports 2 displays. I've had dual-displays for 5 years and couldn't even contemplate going back to a single display.I'm up near Manchester Airport - Cheadle Hulme. I used to live in Ashwell (near Baldock) when I was a lad (about 300 years ago!).Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). July 11, 200322 yr So I take it from the responses that Nvidia is not the flavour of the month?http://saltydogfly2.avsim.net/images/avsim_sig.jpg"I am the keeper of the cheese; you are the lemon merchant"
July 11, 200322 yr Ken, I recall reading somewhere within the last week that initial reports from users of FS2004 state the Radeon cards work better than the Nvidia based cards do.Ray,I am ordering a 21" Dell UltraSharp flat panel monitor...now that is simming in style. Eric
July 11, 200322 yr Lol. I suppose the pendulum has swung to the ATI side (at least in this thread) ;) Personally I /Tord Hoppe, Sweden
July 11, 200322 yr I'm back after a good night's sleep - seems I made the right choice last night then... Thanks to everyone who's posted. I'm pleasantly surprised to see how passive (i.e. non-agressive) this thread is. If only all of them were like this!Tord, are you Danish? You have to be Scandinavian, right? I speak some Danish - would be useful practice!I'm going to ask the question nobody has dared to ask - how much did the 21" Dell ultra sharp cost?!Take care all,Alex
July 11, 200322 yr Hi All,Ditto on the good thread! Eric - that 21" Dell has got to be around $1,000! Nice setup! Now my 21" SGI flat screen CRT doesn't sound so good anymore ;-)Chris
July 11, 200322 yr Moderator Hi Alex,Well I hope I don't let you down. Let's get the graphics card issue out of the way first (Ken, this is for you mainly).I don't have any particularly strong issues for or against ATI cards and they've been around long enough now and enough people have spoken well of them that if someone comes along and asks if one is okay and I can't see anything wrong with one I'll not disagree with their choice.I have used nVidia cards for a long time and my current choice of Ti4600 is still a good card and I expect to keep it for another 12 months at least. My last card was the Matrox G400 which was an excellent card for its time but 32Mb memory is hopelessly inadequate now. However, the new Parhelia really is the business (128Mb or 256Mb versions) but unless you're going to feed signals to three monitors it's probably not worthwhile spending that much money on the card. Now back to your question Alex. There is only one real option. the Iiyama Pro454 19" CRT. PC Pro has it on their A List of displays and I have it too so there you go! ;-) Log onto the Dabs website and enter this code into the Quicklinx search window 29TYWS. At Ray (Cheshire, England). July 11, 200322 yr Ray, you're a gent. Thanks for all the advice. I'll let you know how I get on, I may need a hand (someone?) with getting the right drivers, and also removing (really removing) the NVidia drivers from now.Take care,Alex
July 11, 200322 yr Moderator Hi Alex,You'll need the Detonator Destroyer to remove all evidence of nVidia drivers. Get it here... www.guru3d.com/detonator-destroyer/Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England).
