September 8, 200421 yr Anyone noticed a performance difference after installing XP Service Pack? I installed it this morning and the first thing I noticed is when I ran FS Autostart, I had lost some available memory compared to before the pack, like about 100 Megs worth. The next thing I noticed is that the sim was stuttering as I taxied. I uninstalled it and everything back to normal. ( thank God there was an Uninstall with it).I guess I will rely on my AntiVirus and Norton Firewall to keep my system from getting hijacked.
September 8, 200421 yr >I guess I will rely on my AntiVirus and Norton Firewall to>keep my system from getting hijacked. Did you tweak your system to opt for performance rather than all the candy? You'll find the options in: Control Panel -System - Advanced -Settings. I opted NOT to let XP handle it, and chose Performance as the system criteria.I hope that does it since I just installed XP-Pro AND the pack, and I haven't re-installed FS2004 'yet'. :-outta Ron McLeod - CYEG
September 8, 200421 yr I have not noticed any differences in FS9 or any other common applications (MS Office XP, Adobe stuff, etc.). My computer does seem to start faster and load applications faster, but cannot quantify it. Dick Parker in Northeast Ohio USA Windows 10 64-bit | Nvidia GTX 1080 | ORBX | P3D 4.4.16.27077

Just in case I'm backing up to an external with Ghost so that a rollback is easy. I'm just about to install FS2004 now over my fresh install... and we'll see. ;-)- Ron McLeod CYEG
September 8, 200421 yr The best way to install SP2 is on a clean install of XP. It doesn't like installing over older installations of XP and it can cause quite a bit of trouble. If you do a fresh install of XP and then SP2 you ought to be right ;) Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
September 8, 200421 yr John,Even better than that is merge XP SP1 with SP2 to make a brand new XP SP2 full installation disk!!! I made a bootable XP SP2 install disk today and it works fabulously.Just follow these instructions and youre done!!http://www.winbeta.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5640Armen L Cholakianwww.veryquiet.com Armen L CholakianPMDG Sound Engineer
September 9, 200421 yr Well I did a search on Google tonight on SP2 problems and came up with quite a few including a line of discussion on AVSIM on SP2 problems. Quite a few posts claiming degraded performance after installing SP2. http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...forum=215&page=
September 9, 200421 yr Just a quick update:I've installed xpSP2 now and I've found no problems - in fact - some noticeable improvements over Win2K. Of course, that's today. Tomorrow is another day... Ron McLeod - CYEG
September 9, 200421 yr I downloaded and installed SP2, no problems whatsoever. It took 20 minutes from start to installed. Seems to boot faster to me. Runs everything fine.Best
September 9, 200421 yr Bob,I had a few SP2 issues aswell, but fortunately i was able to get to the root of the problem.A good place to start is the "event viewer", which is located in Control Panel / Administrative Tools. Here you will find a record of error messages pertaining to your pc and im sure you will be able to follow up these problems by copy and pasting the error into google. After a SP2 upgrade from SP1 my pc was experiencing serious stuttering, looking into the event viewer showed that one of the Win XP services was misbehaving with my domain controller. I copy n pasted the problem to google and already microsoft had a workround for the problem.... no more stuttering!Hope this helps.Armen L Cholakianwww.veryquiet.com Armen L CholakianPMDG Sound Engineer
September 9, 200421 yr I have had no problems with SP2. PC does come up faster (to the login box that is). The OS footprint is a little different so it is normal to see a little less available memory.A lot of people have reported hyperthreading problems with FS9, in case you use an Intel chip, may be your issue. I would suspect this before I suspect the service pack. FSStart or the Omega drivers for ATI will also let you start FS9 with a higher priority thread that may help move things along.
September 9, 200421 yr Well I tried installing it again because after uninstalling it I realized that there was still some intermittant stuttering in the audio that I had never had before SP2 and intermittant hesitations. I reinstalled and the stuttering and hesitations are still there but no worse, so I left it in. Audio intermittantly sounds like . " Delta 542, climb and maintain fa..fa..fa..4.thousand feet." Really bugs me, because I didn't have this issue before the SP. The old adage, "If it isn't broken, keep fixing it until it breaks" applies here, I guess :).Worst part about it is the computer geeks at work warned me not to install it..
September 9, 200421 yr Bob,Check your Event Viewer as described above, and look for errors after the SP2 upgrade. Then paste the error into google. Im sure you will get info on specific problems relating to your pc.There are many many SP2 issues but many of them have solutions and temporary workarounds.Armen L Cholakianwww.veryquiet.com Armen L CholakianPMDG Sound Engineer

I wish Microsoft would wanr people when they come out with a Service Pack, that there is a chance that the perfomance of their system can be degraded, and only install the service pack if you think you really need it. I flew tonight and when approaching Palm Beach it would ctach about every 15 seconds and the sound would stutter at about the same rate. Not good, if you value a smooth Simulation.
September 10, 200421 yr Got up this morning and uninstalled SP2 for the 2nd time. Ran System Restore, sat with crossed fingers as XP booted up. Started FS9, no more stuttering audio or jerky video. Back to normal :):):)
