>Missing something? Am doing something wrong?I think yes. 747-400 has no VOR signal receiver (LOC is no VOR), so it can't track VOR. You should just be using VOR as a waypoint and use LNAV instead (which is much better than VOR anyway). I am surprised your search did not find anything - this topic has been discussed here quite a few times. Also you may wait for Rober R. to come up with yet another type rating course - I think non precision approaches are on the agenda if I recall correctly (you will be shooting them at Moses Lake).EDIT: I am sorry, my mistake, the 747-400 of course have VOR receivers (2) but CDI information is not available to pilot.Michael J.http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/for...argo_hauler.gifhttp://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6-banner-beta.jpg

Dirk-I will be going over VOR approaches in the 400 in great detail- but it's a few weeks away still...I've been writing weekly chapters for the PMDG 747 Type Rating Course, and we'll go through all manner of precision/non precision appraoches in due course.(Get it? Due Course?)Love the scrolling checklist, Dirk! That took some effort!

>Hmmm, guess you need another edit - Indeed I do. Mea culpa. :-zhelpI guess the crux with VORs in the 744-400 is that you can't have autopilot tracking them but otherwise, if you want to fly VOR approaches manually - all the info seems to be readily available to the pilot. Lets see what RR comes up with in his type rating courses.Michael J.http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/for...argo_hauler.gifhttp://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6-banner-beta.jpg

Gidday Dirk,You are correct that the 747 does not have the ability to track a VOR radial directly. You need to use LNAV for this and check it against the raw data. For checking raw data you can use the RMI type needle on the ND or better still enter the VOR manually into the NAVRAD page and also the desired course. The course line will appear on your ND. You can then also select VOR instead of map and then you will see the old type of HSI VOR information. You must manually enter this information to be able to use this feature. With this you are able to fly the aircraft around with the non glass cockpit style of nav presentation. It is a requirement in our company that when conducting a VOR approach that one pilot be in map and the other in RAW data. You can also select the raw data down to the lower EICAS screen so that the other pilot can more readily observe the raw data too.CheersSteve

I'm surprised that the 744 doesn't have a VOR/LOC button the the MCP. I track VOR radials often in the 737NG. Hmm
