hi guys,i hope i don't get flamed for posting a 767PIC question here ;-)as it seems to be the "pmdg-ssw-non pic flying people forum" now,but lately when flying online i get to fly app 15 minutes, and then my sim freezes(it freezes, sometimes with, and sometimes without sound looping)...i've tried different aircraft, different times and even a full reinstall of fs2k2,win 98,and pic but nothing helps..any ideas?i'm running an amd athlon 1800,256mb of ram,128mb geforce4 ti 4200,20gb hdd.everything is defragged, formatted and reinstalled, but tonight, when trying a flight the same thing happened:it froze after 20 minutes flying(hmmm...i gained 5 minutes though ;-) )only extra i've got running besides fs2k2 and squawkbox are hostsb(the .dll) and servinfo....i really hope someone has got an idea, for it is driving me crazy:now i finally have the chance to fly online, the sim crashes.

First thing I'd do is ensure that there's not a heat issue happening with either your CPU or video card - this sounds almost precisely like what happens when there's an overheat. Are you getting any visual artifacts or glitches in the sim? Those can also indicate heat problems. Make sure you've got sufficient airflow in the case and that the heatsinks on both the CPU and the video card are seated properly and aren't loose or somethign like that.Second - what specific brand/type of motherboard and RAM are you running - I had lockup and random restart problems with the computer I built for my brother last month and it turned out that the memory timings in the BIOS were being set incorrectly by the auto-configure. Once I changed them to the spec listed on the RAM, it worked flawlessly. The board I was dealing with was an ASUS A7N8X (Nvidia NForce2 chipset).Third - get rid of Windows 98! There's absolutely no reason that you shouldn't be running Windows XP Home on your system. Win98 is very outdated - XP is 100X more stable and support all the new hardware much better in terms of how it handles memory routing etc. If the above two things don't work - go get a copy of XP Home and I bet it'll fix the crashes.Ryan

hi,nope,it just freezes, and i have to restart by taking power off and then on,i see nothing in the sim that indicates anything,it's just from:this second i'm flying, next second it freezes.i've thought of heat myself, but it even does this with a big 45cm fan blowing into the side of the case, and a 27cm fan sucking hot air out.i've got an extra cooler as wel, only thing is:my power supply is right opposite to the cpu, this generates extra heat, and also,it is 35 deg celsius inhere,so there isn't much room for error i believe...nevertheless,the cpu runs at app 35 deg celsius, which i think is fine considering the temp here these days ;-).i'm running a soltek sl-75drv4 mobo, with a 266fsb and 256mb of pc2100 ddr ram, with no brand name(probably not good ;-) )i will check the bios settings tho,did not think of it myself yet...must say though that flying offline is not a problem, even with weathermaker,pic767,fsscreen,and paintshop pro running in the background i've got no problem,so that's why i'm stumped ;-)i usually manage to solve these things myself, just by lurking in the different forums, but hey, man's got to know his limitations eh ;-)i'm thinking of xp myself, but,as i'm not wealthy,i cannot afford it,it'll have to wait for a loooong loooong time, just as a mobo/cpu upgrade...it'll take a few years ;-) (although.....i'll check with "she who must be obeyed",and if that doesn't work i'll just be annoying, that usually does work :-lol )and also,i'd have to have more ram to run it properly right?thanks for the suggestions, its appreciated.

"May be worth checking you don't have this little beastie"According to Symatec, Windows 98 is not affected by this worm ;-)Cheers.Ian.P.S. Tom... With a "45cm fan" (a foot and a half in diameter), I'd give up flying PIC and try to fly your PC Tower :-lol ...but don't forget to ask for ATC clearance before "starting up" ;-)

If it was heat related then the mother board would play a beep sound! And the Blaster virus, makes your XP restart, after detecting an intrusion, I have the virus, not on my PC, but when ever I turn off my firewall XP restarts:o(Awful virus, I can't understand why people love to ruin stuff for others...Have you tried to set the memory cache in the scenery library?Sometimes people have it higher than they have RAM's, it seems like an out of memory thing to me...Also there is something about physical memory...Try and set the refresh rate down to a minimum...I have an AMD1900+ XP on my PC and 512DDR kingston, with no problems using PIC, but you know it's a complex panel, so memory loss is possible!XP doesn't freeze like WIN98 does, it quits the program, and that's what people experienced with the PMDG before the patch...So I think it has got to be a memory issue of some kind...Boaz...

Hey Boaz,Why don't you just back up your stuff and reformat that HDD of yours and get rid of that virus. XP makes reformatting easy!ED

hey, thats something i haven't tried yet:i'll try to set the refresh rate down, thanks for the tip ;-)well,i don't know what my memory does, either way,it could be it,as i only got 256mb,but,it runs all the other(3) aircraft the same:offline is really good, online it freezes after 15 minutes or so....i really don't know what else to try, except flying offline....i'd hate to do that...but hey,if it's all i can do ;-)btw,i've removed the 45cm fan,my wife needed it to cool herself down....after all,it's 30 degrees celsius here ...pffff....thanks for another helpfull suggestion, and please, keep them coming folks!regards

You know at one time in my life that Rich Mullins song meant so very much to me, the meaning is lost now, well at least I have PIC still ;) Regardless of what anyone says PIC will be the one that changed many of our lifes including mine, I too would like to see the compare this to that stopped, causes so many bad feelings when we all use to come together for the enjoyment of our hobby.... Remember the old saying:"the grass always seems greener on the other side"AFA "Realism on the Horizon"Remember Dorthy, from the Wizard of Oz, when she want something to come true, she kept saying it over and over again.Maybe you should try it and see if it works.Don't forget to click your heels....................

I see there will be always a couple of peanut gallery contestants who have contributed nothing towards PIC 767, how's that feather in your cap?[h5]Best Wishes,Randy J.
