Boeing Ad, the PIC Team and this idea that just occured...

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, just to clarify a few things:I am definetely not for classifying this type of info! I'm behind you guys all the way and without the help of the people out there our sim would never have reached the realism it has.Luckily, "our" side of the pond is not involved as much in mass hysteria as the other side. Unfortunately, the "other side" takes these things way too seriously (in my opinion) and Boeing being a US organization things might become very hard. Tero, I'm sure all your Boeing info doesn't come from Boeing, and you definetely flew those FFS's without Boeings approval (why shouldn't you have, its just that Boeing will most probably not support us when it comes to handing out "sensitive" data).I agree with you guys totally. I'm just not sure Boeing does aswell! And without Boeing's approval this endeavour pretty much doesn't stand a chance. Also, remember that AOM's do include security related items. Just an exmaple: the operation of the new armored cockpit doors. Thus, Boeing would have to edit and censor the manuals before handing them out to the public. While I'm sure 99.9% of all hardcore simmers would do this for free, I'm not so sure Boeing's employees are that eager. And that's just one small example of the potential costs involved. Who would carry them? Boeing? Microsoft? The former PIC Team?I do hope I'm wrong about this, though! We'll just have to wait and see.Kind regards,Mark

Just to give you an idea of the security hysteria in the US. The airport I fly 172s out of, KBED, has a few commercial flights on little Pan Am (!) turboprops. We used to have USAir Saab 340s, but those flights have been eliminated. They have to have a full-fledged TSA installation to screen passengers, etc. Recently, we've been told we will now need FBI finger print checks, criminal history record checks, etc., to get a Massport security badge with photo in order to walk, unescorted, out to the rental planes.Lee Hetherington, PP-ASEL (KBED)

yet over 200 hours of simulator time were given to various people for the UAL sim center...a bit controversial imho

Well, to be fair it was economics and the anti-noise crowd that got rid of USAir Express out of BED. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that the State Police prints and background check to rent a GA airplane is just silly. Anyone who's going to do something after they get a FBO check-out to rent the plane (as those of us who do rent planes know, they don't just rent them out to anyone who walks up with a logbook, you have to put in some time to show their staff that you can actually fly) is just going to get escorted and go do it. All the badges do is give Massport some cash and continue to work on ways to justify their continued existance.... But we digress :)

Hi Peter,Sorry, I didn't mean to imply the security had anything to do with USAir. I think that had to do with economics; I don't believe they were flying enough passengers to continue.I just think it is silly that Massport is trying to apply the same security model on KBED that they use at KBOS. Maybe the TSA makes them do it. I don't know though, I recently flew up to sleepy little KRUT in VT, and they had commercial B1900 flights, but their fence gate to the field didn't even have a lock.Lee Hetherington, PP-ASEL (KBED)PS: I did some night currency work recently in 46Z. Lovely 172SP!

Of course, when we show up at BED to pick up pax, no one asks for my "Massport badge" since I don't have one. My IBAC id is more than good enough, if anyone even bothers to look as I walk back out on the ramp.Go figure...

"Luckily, "our" side of the pond is not involved as much in mass hysteria as the other side. Unfortunately, the "other side" takes these things way too seriously (in my opinion)" Well that might be a different case if your local downtown had a few large aircraft fly into their buildings? One problem is that terroist most likely could care less what some countries such as Sweedin or Finland do, they are certainly not marked as we are. It use to be the case where one could "check" in a bag without anyone checking the contents. One could have placed a portable style radio as was used on the TWA bombing into the bag with ease. Now this has changed. Check in a bag and it will be gone through which IT SHOULD. You cannot lock your bags anymore after 9/11. I say this was long overdue because what one can do to minimize the odds of a potential hijack/bombing is all we can do. I don't think the security is harsh, flying out of KOAK was no big deal, 10 minutues from walking in to being at the gate. SO I had to remove my shoes, big deal unless you have smelt my feet ;-). All this might be a royal pain in someone's arse but not mine... Best Wishes,
Randy J. Smith

P M D G's 747-400

coming to a runway near you
Caution! Yeah, but some of it is just silly! Last fall when I flew to Heathrow out of Boston, I had to take off my brown Ecco shoes, but those with huge Michael Jordan Nike basketball shoes did ~not~ have to take off those shoes. Apparently athletic shoes did not need to be removed, no matter how big and bulky they were. Huh?Anyone see the piece in Fahrenheit 9/11 where it is OK with the TSA (Transportation Safety Administration) to bring aboard up to 4 packs of matches and 2 lighters, ~per person~, even now after Richard Reid, on a non-smoking flight? Huh?Lee Hetherington, PP-ASEL (KBED)

As silly as it sounds, the reasoing behind who can and cant wear shoes is the kind of shoe that is on. The metal detector works by detecting something dense. Ecco and other dress shoes, when put thruough a metal detector, will, a majorityh of the time, set them off. However, tennis/athletic shoes, which are made out of leather, and foam, and a lot less dense, will set it off far fewer times (although I do know someone whose tennis shoes set it off). Therefore it is easir to make all dress shoes taken off, and screened, rather than have a lot of people with them on set off the detector and than wand them. Basically it just svaes time, even though it takes some. Matches and lighters, i dont know about, except that some airports do have smoking lounges or allow somking so they could use them past security. HOpe that helpsOhh big hint for going thru TSA---if you smile, say hi, and be freindly, they will be nice to you. I think they have gotten sick of everyone treating theim badly (I'm not saying you are at all, I was wondering the same thing you were about the shoes, and then someone explained it to me) that they really appreciate a nice person. Honestly, you would be surprised how much a hi, how are you, gets you with anyone.

The shoe thing is interesting and I have given it a little thought just a few weeks back. I believe there are metal *nails* or the like in the normal *dress* shoe that sneakers do not have. So this certainly can explain why they are not of interest. This has nothing to do with the wearer since I have seen grandmothers shoeless ;D too.. Best Wishes,
Randy J. well, you're actually wrong why shoes have to come off.... I work for the TSA, but it's 'Sensitive Security Information' so I can't disclose the reasoning without probably losing my job.Let's just say, there's a valid reason for shoes of certain types to come off. Speculate all you want :)- Jeff

i really don't see the point in banning certain items ...my father had a pocket knife(gift) in his luggage, NOT his hand luggage so the bad that goes into the hull, and it was denied.. he was told this when he arrived his destination 8 hours later...i mean come on... you can kill someone perfectly with an umbreally, a tie, a sjawl....everything Can be a potential murder weapon... where does it end?I understand very well that 9/11 brought to light very grave discrepancies but the way it's going now is just out of proportion imhoGreetings
