October 18, 200421 yr Hello All,I really can't wait to get my hands on the LDS 767-300ER. :-)Watching the video I noticed after the engine failed the corresponding PACK was shutdown, why was this done? Can 1 Pack maintain cabin pressure at FL Fantastic? Also, what would cause an engine fire in real life, and how serious is it i.e. Can you recover from an engine fire 100% of the time?Best Regards,PaulEDIT : Corrected my spelling of LDS, *:-*
October 18, 200421 yr Things that may cause an engine fire (which is very rare) range from ingestion of foreign objects into the engine to various mechanical failures that allow fuel to be released and ignited. Recover 100% of the time? Well, you don /Tord Hoppe, Sweden
October 18, 200421 yr Hi Tord,Thanks for the reply, I was wondering why not just open the isolation valve and let one engine power both packs? Also, what sort of mechanical failures would result in an engine fire?CheersP.S. Anyone know what failures will the LDS 767 have?
October 18, 200421 yr Re P.S: I think the same (atlast) as the V1.About the PACKS. Some airlines use only 1 pack if there are only a few passengers onboard. If you start the APU, you can replace the pack again by APU bleed air. But it mostly won't be replace because that could leed to smoke or fumes in the cabin comming from the ENG fire.Hope it helps,
October 19, 200421 yr Hi,So if a few turbine blades separate because of FOD, are you likely to get an engine fire? Also, I wouldn't have thought an engine fire would be easy to stop if fuel lines had broken.... BTW
October 19, 200421 yr Pulling the Fire Handle on the 75/76 does 7 things.1. Closes Fuel and Spar Valve2. Closes Eng Bleed Air Valve3. Deactivates Thrust Reverser4. Closes Eng HYD Pump Supply5. Trips Gen Field and Breaker6. Silences Fire Bell7. Arms Both Fire EXT Bottles.

October 19, 200421 yr I have no idea of what the percentage of a fire is if a turbine blade brakes loose :)As per Marks explanation below, one of the things that happen when the fire warning handle is pulled is that the fuel valve to that engine is shut off. I /Tord Hoppe, Sweden
October 19, 200421 yr Perfectly clear, I always thought that Boeing aircraft had 4 "bottles"; two for each engine. BTW - Is the extinguisher just C02 and where does it enter/exit the engine?Again, thanks for the info!
October 19, 200421 yr You know, IMHO they should just have an engine eject button.. LOL if the engine goes on fire and can't be extinguished then it should be ejected to prevent wing damage.. LOL just make sure you do it over water.. heheheeJust a thought..
October 19, 200421 yr Just for hypothetical discussion...having an engine depart the aircraft would set up quite an imbalance both weight and a change in aerodynamics....then you have the problem of making sure it seps cleanly and doesn't do anything aerodynamically odd like go "up" into the wing/stabilizers vs down. I know of two total engine seps off the plane. One is the DC-10 failure at KORD and the other is a 727 over Florida. The 727 made it, the DC-10 didn't.Tim__757
