July 23, 200322 yr What, in your guy';s opinion is the best mobo currently?Just getting my stuff put together for a home built rig comeing up
July 23, 200322 yr You didnt state that you wanted AMD or Intel but I know the good one for AMD is the ASUS A7n8X Dlx rev 2.
July 24, 200322 yr Asus P4C800 or the newest Abit Board. As far as performance goes the two run neck and neck.Bobby
July 24, 200322 yr When paired w good matched memory the board is the best performing platform for the latest P4 CPU's.Good choice and good luck :)Bobby
July 25, 200322 yr Whatever suits ya fancy, but I say AMD is the way to go if your not a millionaire :-)
July 25, 200322 yr >Whatever suits ya fancy, but I say AMD is the way to go if>your not a millionaire :-)No longer true. The AMD chips (Barton) are way too expensive for the performance they offer, they not only perform worse (in MSFS) than equivalent Intel chip they are actually more expensive. There used to be a lot of incentives to buy AMD because of their excellent perf/price ratio - not any more. Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg Michael J.
July 25, 200322 yr >Whatever suits ya fancy, but I say AMD is the way to go if>your not a millionaire :-)Have you seen the cost of a 3200+? Not exactly chump change anymore. Besides the performance difference between it and the new P4C's. If you take your time and shop around you really don't need to be a millionaire. There was a point were your statement would be valid but unfortunately AMD still can't touch the performance of a P4. Having owned a 2400+ when they first came out I can say that until that point they more than held their own against a P4 but those days are gone. The newer 3200+ is a great CPU but when the sun goes down it's still riding a 400 Mhz bus and a significant clock speed shortage. But as you said so well....Whatever suits YOUR fancy :)Bobby
July 25, 200322 yr Hi guys,On a somewhat related note, I too am going to upgrade to the ASUS P4P800 mother board. One thing that I found that I am going to need in order to do this is a new power supply. This board has one of those 4-pin square ATX12V connectors to give more juice to the processor. I popped the hood of my case last night and noticed that my current PSU does not have one of these connectors :-(. Looking at pricewatch.com I was trying to find at least a 400W PSU that has one of these square ATX12V plugs. One PSU Tom's like was the Fortron PSUs. I can't tell by looking at the pictures if this would work. Do you guys know of a PSU that is 400 watts and is P4P800 compatible? I couldn't find the exact PSU Tom's used to run all of the benchmarks. I was trying to find a compatible one on ASUS's website to no avail.Take care!-CJ Starr
July 26, 200322 yr I'm also looking at the Asus P4C800 Deluxe mobo, but I have one Q... http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/...-d/overview.htmI'm looking to get 1GB of RAM, which brand/model would be recommended for best performance? With future upgradeability in mind. :)edit: I'm also wondering about the P4C800-E. Am I better to get the -E version? Also, if I choose to get a soundblaster card, can the onboard sound be disabled, or can the 2 work together? Declared weather: FSX: ASN / FS9: ASE
July 26, 200322 yr I decided to go the vanilla Abit IC7 over the Asus offerings, they're cheaper than the Asus offerings and equally as good IMO :)Stonecold:You can use both PCI soundcards & the onboard sound at the same time. I use the onboard for my headset when on VATSIM.As for memory, why not go for some paired 512MB sticks to use in Dual DDR? You can purchase specially tuned pairs aimed at use in Dual DDR configuration. Corsair or OCZ are two good brands. Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
July 26, 200322 yr "You can use both PCI soundcards & the onboard sound at the same time. It's hard to choose things when you don't really know any of the brands.... :) Declared weather: FSX: ASN / FS9: ASE
July 26, 200322 yr Corsair are an excellent brand IMO. Lifetime warrenty, quality sticks, you can't really ask for better. They also generally rate in the top 1 or 2 performers at any given time. :) Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
July 26, 200322 yr Corsair it will be, then. :) Thanks for the info. :) Declared weather: FSX: ASN / FS9: ASE
