My CTD Investigation

Featured Replies

Dear Sirs, I am experiencing CTD after AS2004 loads its weather information into COF while I am just sitting at a gate with the panel screen up. I have tested just letting the panel sit there for awhile and no CTD occurs. As some background I have only FSNav, FSUIPC and the PSS A-330 as commercial addons in my system. I am using FSW latest clouds fix along with PAI AI planes. I have never experienced a CTD with my system before. Also, if I don't use AS2004 my system continues to operate correctly. I have read through the forum and tried the different tweaks presented but no change. I did find information in the FSUIPC (registered) log that may or may not be of help. The first clip is sitting at KATL with a successful start and end of COF. ********************************************************************** FSUIPC, Version 3.135 by Pete Dowson *********User Name="Ken Cheek"User Addr="[email protected]"FSUIPC Key is providedWIDEFS not user registered, or expiredModule base=61000000ClassOptions: UIPCMAIN=FF7F, FS98MAIN=FF7F, FS2KMAIN=FF5EWeatherOptions(Orig)=4000B685[4000B685]InitDelay: 0 secondsWeatherReadInterval=16DebugStatus=15 1500 System time = 01:06:50 1500 E:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9 1500 System time = 01:06:50, FS2004 time = 12:00:00 (00:00Z) 2485 E:Documents and SettingskaaceeMy DocumentsFlight Simulator FilesMyStartup.flt 2500 AIRCRAFTb747_400Boeing747-400.air 24110 E:Documents and SettingskaaceeMy DocumentsFlight Simulator FilesUI generated flight.flt 24813 Clear All Weather requested: external weather discarded 25641 Advanced Weather Interface Enabled 35969 Traffic File #15 = "sceneryworldscenerytraffic030528" 36313 Traffic File #16 = "sceneryworldscenerytraffic_pai" 96032 E:Documents and SettingskaaceeMy DocumentsFlight Simulator FilesUI generated flight.flt 96750 Clear All Weather requested: external weather discarded 99907 System time = 01:08:29, FS2004 time = 12:43:50 (17:43Z) 99907 *** FSUIPC log file being closedMemory managed: 2 Allocs, 2 Freed********* FSUIPC Log file closed ****The next clip is the same airport using AS2004. To recap, my procedure I use is: Run COF in windowed mode (this occurs even if I use Full-Screen). Load a plane to an airport. Run AS2004. AS2004 grabs weather from weather station and loads into COF/FSUIPC. About 5-10 secs later I will see my FPS drop dramaticly (probably due to FSUIPC writing out all the errors) COF shows "an error has occured". Click OK and COF exits while AS2004 is only program left running. Thank you in advance, Ken Cheek

Hi Ken,WOW! Thank you for the very informative error report. Very nice!Unfortunately this specific error hasn't ever been reported before (at least at first glance), so no easy known fixes, but let's try to track it down...Do you have FSW clouds installed? If so, do you have RENDER TO TEXTURE OFF (required) and the 32-bit cloud set from FSW (required)? This is a known CTD issue but from your logs I am not sure it is related. Worth a check..I had problems with the CAT 3.10 drivers (different problem, but graphics issues are always unpredictable) and they were remedied by going to the latest Omega drivers. This is with the 9700Pro. In my case AS2004 had nothing to do with it, multiple cloud layers did.Have you tried loading FS default real weather (without AS2004) to see if the problem is related to something in FS9 weather? Please try the above and see if it solves it. If you continue to have probs, please post your FSUIPC.INI file and feel free to email me directly at [email protected] for further troubleshooting.Thanks!-Damian

Hi Damian, Thank you for your prompt reply. I went ahead and took the plunge and decided to uninstall and reinstall COF and the additional programs just to be absolutely sure. As it turns out, it all works as advertised now. For the uninstall I double-checked that all registry keys were removed using RegCleaner. I have reinstalled the PSS A-300, FSUIPC and FSNav 4.60. At each stage I loaded the same jet as before going to the same locations and loaded AS2004 and it worked correctly. I have not placed the PAI aircraft back in yet since I have 20+ airlines and each needs to be loaded seperately. After each airline is installed I will do the check with AS2004. If it turns out that something I add after this point reproduces the error I will let you know. As an aside, I was using Chris's 32 bit clouds with render to texture off before. I was also able to select any of the weather themes and download weather with no issues. That's where my confusion came in since it worked fine without AS2004 but there must have been something somewhere that was causing a conflict. Also, when I reinstalled COF I kept my previous fs9.cfg file so that does not appear to have been an issue either. At this point I am not using Chris's clouds since my system seems to be able to handle the default clouds fine. (That may change after I start adding the PAI planes.) I also havn't done any long flights (30+ real-time minutes) so I still have that to test but I did want to tell you the weatherscapes your program creates (now that I can see them) are sometimes breathless. Sincerely, Ken Cheekps: As I mentioned before, I had gone through the forum here both before and after my purchase so I had seen all the tweaks and also where some users were going above and beyond the call of duty to make you feel bad that you sold them something that they're not happy with. Lincoln said it best, "You can please some of the people all of the time..." (Or was it Mark Twain?). Don't let those customers who feel they were "ripped off" interfere with your desire to create and support. My opinion: Respond once with your best foot forward to those who are being abusive and move on from that point. In most cases, you aren't going to get a lot of forum posts praising your programs because 1) It works for them so no need for them to come online and 2) It works and they're too busy enjoying the sights to come online. :)

Excellent post Ken - glad to see you are enjoying AS2004 and have been able to find the time to make such positive comments.I always think that a single positive statement beats away 20 negative posts and puts those who are so full of negativity back on their heels (or a_rse).Your experiences go to show that by gathering useful information, presenting it to the developer in an unemotive and factual manner and then following the advice given, often a good outcome (as in your case) can be achieved.I thought I had followed all the suggested tweaks until I read a thread earlier (Whoa!) and realised that I had the suggested ideal settings factored for the unregistered version of FSUIPC when I have the registered version installed. A couple of nips and tucks to correct this and the weather delivery has improved.I would suggest that some of the naesayers follow your example and take the time to make sure they have an uncorrupt installation of FS before they engage 'whine' mode.Andy b

Ken,Just a question :Why do you instal PAI airlines seperately ?Is this because you do not use the official files ?With the latest installer (2.3) it is perfectly possible to install more than one airline at a time.thankshttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpgPatrick/EBBR

Hello Patrick, I am going to install each seperately in case it turns out that a particular airline caused the CTD issue. If I install all at once and the CTD occurs again, I could make the assumption that there's a problem with PAI planes in general but I don't think that would be fair to the PAI group. The PAI airline packages was the only other "mod" I had in the system that I have not replaced since my re-install (except for Chris's clouds which will follow after the PAI installs). I hope no one is assuming that I am certain that the problem occured because of PAI or anything else. I'm just a nut when it comes to puzzles and I'm still baffled that COF was running 100% until I ran AS2004 and only a re-install fixed the issue. If after replacing everything it turns out that all of the programs and mods are still working then I'll simply melt into the background and babble incoherently for a few days. ;) Ken Cheekps: I'm also aware that we're talking about COF the master of bewilderment in-of-itself. hehpps: Sorry I didn't answer your original question which is yes, these are all official packages, no user edit versions.

Hi Ken,Ok Ken now I can understand what you are trying to detect and install those PAI files seperately. Are you sure the CTD issue is not caused by the seasonal landclass bug mentioned in numerous other posts in the General Discussion Forum ?http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpgPatrick/EBBR

Hi Patrick, To be honest, no I'm not. I did try the scenario at ENAN with my recent re-install and got a true CTD (my original was "an error has occured.." rather than a true CTD). After applying the fix suggested I did not get the error again, so yes there is that except that in my original problem I would go to KATL, load AS2004 and crash. After the reinstall I duplicated the situation and AS2004 ran fine (this was before I put the ENAN fix in) so in that case I'm not sure the the MaskClassMap issue was relevant. (I did not have the ENAN fix in on my previous installation) In addition, I just finished a flight from KATL to KJFK with no issues except for the missing weather station at KJFK which I understand is a known bug being looked at. So, as I mentioned earlier, my process is that each time I replace a mod/program back into COF I then try to duplicate my original problem. I am not assuming that the problem DID lay with any of those programs/mods simply that as far as I can tell, this is the most reliable way I can confirm if one of them did. Regards, Ken Cheek

All programs/mods are now back in COF and here is my conclusion: A comet passed nearby the planet Pluto during a time when 5 major planets were aligned towards Andromeda thus causing a severe karma spike within the COF hence creating the COD :( Honestly, I have no clue as to what caused my original error. The system has been running 100% with all of the programs/mods re-installed and I've ran flights over over 1 hour with no problems of any sort. (outside of known bugs) The only thing different is I have done the MaskClassMap fix mentioned in the General folder but as far as I can tell that fix is for specific areas and times. The KLAX/KLAT area is unaffected and if you look at the original error transcripts you can see that the error occured during a weather initialization procedure. Is it possible that a BMP somewhere got hosed? Sure. Is it possible that some combination of installing programs/mods hosed the system (I could not remember the original order that I had placed the programs/mods into COF). Sure. I had installed some demos/mods that I then removed for various reasons and it's possible they may left some sort of "residue" that stayed in the system creating a "time-bomb" scenario when the right conditions presented itself. As such since it was originaly mentioned that this error had not been brought up before and it is not reproducable at my end at this time I am taking full blame for the error but I do appreciate your companys assistance and suggestions of what to check to help me identify the problem. My thanks again for your program and enjoy the rest of the year. Sincerely, Ken Cheek

Now is the time to do a full (including Registry) backup. Nortons Ghost or Drive Image should do the trick.Andy b

I've got RAR archives of the folders I fiddle with the most like FS9/Textures, FS9/Scenery/World, FS9/Aircraft - A reasonable alternative to full backup. Oh - set a restore point!
