"Pop" go the clouds...

Featured Replies

With the current public beta of MR1 I now have rather massive "cloud pop" problems, that I didn't have before. On earlier flights I attributed that to the fact that I was flying in Africa, with very few stations, but today I am flying from Zurich (LSZH) to Budapest (LHBP) and all cloud coverage just disappears around my current position, redrawing in the distance, but around the airplane everyhing is totally clear, no matter what the metar is.Right now I am 4 miles from Graz (LOWG), which has the following metar:LOWG 191020Z 09010KT 050V120 9999 SCT035 SCT050 03/M07 Q1020 NOSIGAS just updated and there is no cloud to be seen anywhereTAF processing is disabled, suprression range 60, suppression ceiling 2000, FS cloud draw distance 60, AS max vis 50, auto global writes on, plan loaded, wind smoothing on (which work great now!).Any clue what other options I might tweak to avoid ending up in the clear every 10 minutes?Best RegardsMax (Bern, LSZB)http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg

Force destination weather?JimActiveSky Support

Forgive my geographic ignorance - is budapest within 75nm of Graz, and was budapest reporting clear skies? 'EDIT> Two questions really - Graz to Budapest is more like 150 miles? Maybe 200? Was the report for Budapest CLR skies? Thanks!sg

Hmmm,Tried several more flights with different settings, same result, I am flying over a solid overcast, AS updatesPOPI am in the clear. Then clouds nicely and gradually reappear until the next AS update 10 minutes laterPOPClearTried with or without TAF processing, with or without destination force. Maxing the cloud draw distance is not really an option, since it will totally tank my frame rates.I never had this this bad with previous AS2004 versions until the interim releases. Ok wind smoothing works great, but leads to unrealistically high aloft temps (+9

Max,It may have been a post by me that Jannier was refering to when he suggested you max the FS2004 cloud draw distance. I flew your route to Buhdapest with cloud draw distance at max and experienced the same thing you are experiencing. Clouds around the aircraft disappear every time AS2004 updates.Sorry the cloud draw distance at max did not help out.

Thanks for trying the same thing! At least it's not just me ;-)I have pretty much the same effect now flying from Cape Town to Durban and what's realy frustrating is that with build 81 I never get any clouds at the destination.Durban was buried under a solid overcast, but 25 miles out, all clouds disappeared again, being replaced by this annoying haze layer that I get at every destination, no clouds, just a thick haze in Cape Town, Lagos, Durban, Budapest, Berlin, Zurich, no matter what the metar says...Additionally all clouds always disappear when I ALT-TAB out of FS for more than a few seconds, that was never the case before. Whenever I paused a flight to post here today, all clouds were gone when I returned, no matter where.Of course I'm sure we'll get this sorted out eventually, but right now my AS experience is really frustrating for the first time since I started using and beta testing it.Best RegardsMax (Bern, LSZB)http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg

>Hmmm,>>Tried several more flights with different settings, same>result, I am flying over a solid overcast, AS updates>>POP>>I am in the clear. Then clouds nicely and gradually reappear>until the next AS update 10 minutes later>>POP>>Clear>>I have exactly the same problem. I made a flight down the East Coast of the United States at FL 330. Every station within 300 miles of my flight path was reporting a solid overcast, and yet it was perfectly clear within a 15-20 mile radius of my aircraft. Looking in any direction - forward, back, left or right, I could see the overcast - but I could never actually fly over the clouds. The overcast layer in front would continually recede as I approached it, while the overcast to the rear would gradually fill behind me. This problem continued for the whole flight.I have my suppression level set at 10,000 feet. Once I descended below that altitude, I finally saw the undercast appear in the immediate vicinity of my aircraft.Jim Barrett

Jim,What were your AS settings for your flight.JimActiveSky Support

Jim,what settings do you recommend at this point?May FS9 settings (which I never touched) are:Max vis 60 nmcloud draw distance 60 nmdynamic change noneCloud density MaxFSUIPC 3.201 registered, minimum weather defaultsSome settings in AS2004 I didn't play with:Route based wind smoothing on (necessity to avoid wrecking the PMDG 737 over central europe)suppression range 60suppression ceiling 2000flight plan always loadedapart from that I tried pretty much ever possible combo to avoid the clouds disappearing on every AS update.force destination wx on or offextended destination wind force on or offglobal write toggle on or offglobal writes on or offtaf processing on or offvis smoothing on or offovercast enhancement on or offupdate supression on or offlocal supression on or offlimit cloud layers on or offover europe and africa I always end up in the clear, I can only choose how frequently I want to have the clouds pop away from me by changing the AS update interval.Again, I'm not trying to bash anyone or put down as2004, but while a quantum leap forward as far as winds are concerned, the latest build is a big step backwards in the area of weather and cloud depiction for me.Best RegardsMax (Bern, LSZB)http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg

Max,Let's get this one worked out. I'm sure you still have your V1.0 and Alpha 1 patch. Uninstall and re-install 1.0 and A1. I want to get you back to a version where you have no pop-ups. Then we'll move forward.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

ok, Jimfirst let me say that your help is always immensely appreciated.I completely uninstalled everything AS2004 and am now back to the alpha.I just departed Johannesburg (FAJS), headed for Mombasa (HKMO) in really lousy weather, rain with a thick overcast, wich is beautifully sticking around, no popping in to the clear, even thugh AS has already refreshed twice.I left everything AS at the standard settings, except for the online updates, which I enabled. TAF processing offsuppression range 50suppression ceiling 10000Best RegardsMax (Bern, LSZB)http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg

That's good news. Now, write down that set of settings. Don't just save the .ini file because you are going to delete it. Next, delete AS2004.ini, install MR1, and use the exact settings as you wrote down. Then fly and see what happens. I am trying to see if this is an internal problem in MR1 or a settings conflict somewhere.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support
