AS2004 and RealityXP wx500

Featured Replies

Hi all,Apologies if this has been covered before but I couldnt find any results.I have been testing Realityxp wx500 with AS2004 but what I see on the radar screen is not what I see outside the aircraft. My particular issue is with major storms, there doesnt seem to be the horseshoe cloud shapes coupling the large red areas of the radar screen.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Best regardsArmen L Cholakianwww.veryquiet.com

Armen,I can tell you I've seen the return shadows that you describe - not that that helps solve your problem! What the RXP wx500 considers severe storms may be more rare with AS2k4 weather than other sources, realistically imo. Where (geographically) do you usually fly - US or other? Do you have the option for "force TS with CB" on in you AS2k4 options? Outside the US, this is one common reason for under-reported thunderstorms. I'd be happy to point you towards some nice weather for what you're looking for!Best,sg

Gentlemen,Many thanks for your quick replies. I do most of my flying out of London Heathrow (EGLL), and I didnt have "Force TS with CB" checked but I will turn it on and give it a try.One more question, once AS2004 has loaded the local weather and the flightplan weather into FS2004, is it okay to shut AS2004 down ?Armen L Cholakianwww.veryquiet.com

I can answer that.In a word, NO!AS is constantly feeding the FS weather engine as you move using the current METARS from a range around your current position and providing various interpolations among the reporting points. It is no longer required to put the flight plan into AS2004.5 142 beta unless you wish to have it printed out.You must keep AS active for your entire flight using a refresh a few minutes before you depart so the weather can properly be set. This applies whether you are on-line or downloading a weather set (archived or current). With reference to the horseshoe shapes, I can see that occasionally but remember the WX500 scan width is limited. Also in the WX500 manual read up on the masking effect of farther returns by closer strong returns. Also on the Reality-XP site you will find a link to a white paper on properly using tilt control which does relate to your question. As AS improves and the resulting visual model improves, so does the return from the WX500. It is a great companion.
